During the event I also saw another car with the same plates, fitted in the same manner: this was one of the X1/9 road racer. So this is serious stuff.

2 years ago, after many hesitation (cutting in a good body makes me cry)I went all the way to properly install these camber plates.

First, I must mention they are nearly universal camber plates of great quality sold by Carrera. I bought them used from a Saturn SC road racer. I think they worth $200 new.

Fitting them involved cuttin the bump over the shocks to have a flat surface to lay the base of the plates. This was done with great care with a cutter disc on a grinder. I could have enlarged the hole after that but I felt there was no need. Then the base part is screwed on the top of the apron with some washers underneath to spread the load (argh! 6 holes for each plate).

I had to cut 1/2 inch of the inner stud of the front plates because it was too high (hitting the hood - I have proof of it - sniff, sniff)

The inner diameter of the bearing is made to accomodate carrera inserts that are larger than Fiat X1/9 ones, so I had to use some shims to avoid movement.

Adjustment of the camber is straightforward. Jack the car, loosen the 3 nuts at the top then move the top plate in or out. I took measurement with a carpenter dial bolted to a straight rule. Not really accurate but fine for now. I will probably buy a better tool one day.

Conclusion: I like the look, the quality of the part and the ease of adjustment. For a lowered car (coil-over set-up) I think this is a must.

If I had to buy new camber plates, I would shop for some VW, Toyota or Honda parts that would fit, or I would have a machine shop do something for me. It would do the job as well for less money. But if you can find some Carrera plates on the used parts market, they are a good investment!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Ours consist of the flat plate and then two collars holding in a spherical bushing that locates the top of the strut.

The number is camber in degrees, so we currently run 1.5 deg negative in the rear and 1.25 neg in the front. Steve built custom tools for checking camber and toe (somewhere I have photos,maybe I can dig them up).

Also note on the photo the "seam" below the camber plate - that's the where Steve had to weld the chassis back together after it cracked from stress (the car is a 74 and they're somewhat known for this problem). The camber mark is also therefore one of 4 measurement points used to check that the chassis has not bent or cracked further.

This all sounds like autox is very hard on the car, but this IS a stripped-out, 1650 lb, race-only car, so it gets pretty hard use compared to other classes in autox.

The center clearance hole cannot be modified in a street prepared class. I believe that Steve Hoelscher has washers stacked under his plates to raise them up to the top of the factory bump/lip. My plates are currently mounted underneath, which limits my suspension travel. I think I will look into moving them up top for more strut travel in the near future.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
