The switch isn't hooked up to anything, and I would simply assume the PO had just stuck a switch in the hole like he did with others. *BUT*, the electrical manual has a picture that shows them side by side too. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Mac- thanks for this tip!! It certainly seems like the centre position (for brighter dash lights) on my switch is not working as you suggest. I didn't really think that Fiat would have designed the dash lights to be so dimly lit as std spec. Interesting that you mention a POT that can be spun to adjust the intensity of the console lights - is this applicable to 1300 X's? My car certainly has the fibre-optic lights on the console which are activated by the lower position on the dash light rocker switch i.e. go on/off with the dash lights, and are dim as well. Can you describe just where the pot should be positioned on the console, please Mac? cheers, ian <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I noticed from your email address that you are in New Zealand, where the X1/9s were Australian-spec, correct?

I am not sure how they were set up on your X1/9s, I know you guys got some weird variations of these cars, 1500 bodied-Xs with 1300 engines & stuff like that, but on a US-spec car, be it a 1300 or a 1500, there is a dimmer dial located on the center console (near the rocker switches & the ashtray) that control the center console lights in an analog fashion.

Then, also on 1300s and 1500s, there is a 3-position switch for the instrument cluster lights, as a separate issue from the console dial. At one end of the switch's travel, the lights are off, the center setting is supposed to be "low" and the opposite end of travel is supposed to be "high"...

Sounds like someone may have crossed some wires on yours -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Mac - thanks for quick response. Firstly, yes I am in New Zealand, and secondly no,(thankfully) our X1/9's were not Australian-spec. The ozzies had to put up with horrible things called ADR's (Australian Design Rules) which made their fully imported cars really oddballs. Fully built-up X1/9's into NZ, for sale as new by dealers here, were generally to UK-spec and imported from UK (attractive tariff concessions were in place in those days). Some privately imported X's also may have come from Italy-France etc but their LHD would have made them not so attractive. From the very comprehensive documentation that came with my X, it definitely is UK-spec (with the British flag alongside Nuccio Bertone's signature on the small plaque on the LH-side front guard - it is a Serie Speciale model). Now, back on to the dash light subject - the driver's handbook describes the dash light switch as having a bright and dim position and no mention of a dimmer control (and there ain't one on my car as I looked carefully after reading your post on this!). I pulled the switch off the console and there are three spade connections/wires attached. By bridging the power wire to the other wires in turn, only one wire lights up the dash lights - dimly. I think the second wire lights up the console lights - dimly also. I can't figure out how an ordinary-looking 3 position rocker switch can give you a bright/dim option! It would need to have a rheostat control, wouldn't it? This gets more puzzling the more I think about it! cheers, ian<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Well, on my '80, the dial operates only the center console lights (roll it up to dim, down to brighten) and the 3-position switch operates only the instrument cluster lights (up for bright, center for dim, down for off).

What's more, both work totally independent of one another, and independent of all the rest of the exterior lights! Meaning, you can have the dash/console/outside lights on or off in any combination at any given time.

I am not saying your car is wired incorrectly, but I am saying that I have personally never seen an X1/9 that was wired differently from the way mine are. Both my '75 & my '80 are wired just like this. I have not looked any of it up in the specs though, where did you find that confirming bit of wiring info? -Mac.

The wiring diagram I'm referencing is in the "X1/9 Electrical Diagnostic Manual 1980-1981". The schematic on page 40 has everything wired to the dimmer, yet the drawing on page 41 "Dash Panel Locations" clearly shows both the dimmer and the switch. Very weird.

My X was built 6/80. When did yours begin it's rust cycle?

I wonder if it changed for the '81 model? (mine is shown as an '81 on the pinkslip, yet State Farm couldn't insure it as such because the VIN format for '81 is longer than mine). anyone with an '81 or later that can check their dashlight controls?
