I did it on my car. I asked myself the same thing.
I painted all the chrome parts with black trim paint (SELM) after sanding them to have more adhesion.
This is fine for the parts that won't be scratched. Some of the side windows trim now have a few scratches but I can touch-up them easily. The outside door handle are the same. Maybe I should have them powder coated.
I'm going to send my bumper to powder coating over the winter. I had to repaint the front one every year (I got the 1500 cc bumpers) because of rock chipping. The rear one still wear it's three year old pain, so it is not such a problem.
After a few year, I still love the look enough to keep it that way.

Sandblast them with a fine (read: low metal scarification) sand. My personal preference is black beauty fine sand. Alternatively, if you have access to a blast cabinet and want to spend a few bucks, walnut hulls might be good too (not sure if they have enough "oomph" to remove chrome though).
After blasting, the metal should receive 2 THIN coats of POR-15 and a coat or two of POR black chassis coat (uv coverage... the POR-15 is UV sensitive).
If you do it carefully (practice on some old stuff first) you can get a near perfect finish.

I sandblasted those bits, then primed with PPG DP90 epoxy primer, sanded a little, then topcoat with Ditzler Delstar acrylic enamel with isocyanate hardner and a flatting agent mixed in. I don't think the sandblasting is necessary; just be sure to throughly sand the surfaces to be painted. 80 grit is OK.
The bumpers are anodized aluminum, too tough to sandblast, and even tough to grind with a coarse flexible disk... I used a coarse (approx 50 grit) disk, but had to prime'n sand twice, then same topcoat as noted above. I think Daniel's point about powdercoating the front bumper is wise.
Also used same topcoat on all plastic trim after I cut the surface with coarse steelwool. Bare plastic looks grey after all these years.
I didn't want to get sand in the door handles, so scratched the chrome off by hand with 36 grit. Leave the chrome square around the keyhole chrome.
Finally, to eliminate the last hiccups from the profile, I tinted the sidemarker lights black...two light coats only. File off the lettering and sand with 1200 grit.
The targa trim can be slowly and carefully pried off. I used two wide, flat wood chisels.It snaps onto some bumps on the pinchweld flange, and that is where to pry. Locate the bumps by prying gently and you'll see where the trim is not moving.

I used fine Scotchbrite pads, primered the bumpers black, used Duplicolor Trim Paint... all in rattle cans.
Nothing flakes, and scratches and dings are easily resprayed without redoing the entire piece. Trim paint is VERY forgiving.
I also recommend their Vinyl and Fabric Spray...

The Spoiler can still be had but not at the sale price... Catalog No. 643C-10, (January 2001), pages 80 and 81.
The closest one still available to mine is on page 80, lower left corner... and it was a BMW I saw that was what I wanted to emulate... so I ordered the one of three they have available in that style.
There are 51, 53, and 56 inch long spoilers that fit numerous applications.
Mine actually measures 54 inches wide... (53 is what I was expecting) and all the other specs are right on. The primary concern before aesthetics is the span of the outer two pedestals... which are 47 inches on mine... which is what I measured on the Bimmer.
The lighted spoilet comes with three pedestals and really does need it... I hacked mine off and (spent hours) routing the wiring down through one of the outer peds...
Now I use caution when lifting the trunk lid with it... with two hands, as it does flex in the middle. Leaving the center ped in would eliminate the worry... but I didn't like the looks. The instructions even said it was OK to eliminate.
Anyway... they list only 2 part numbers, one for lighted and one unlighted (which only comes with two peds)

As fo my interior... I am really impressed also... and rather embarrased to tell ya I just painted the door panels... chrome, plastic, vinyl, rubber, stainless steel, you name it... in one sweep.
I was gonna take it all apart... but tested the Duplicolor spray here and there while it was in place... then continued until it was done.
Each piece took on a different SHEEN depending on the material... I was estactic!
I pulled the seats, dash and carpet, the sprayed the entire cockpit. Looks like I re-upholstered EVERYTHING!
I do plan to find better seat covers or possibly replace the seats entirely...
I'll have to find a good deal though... but I know I can "match" the color...

I did it on my car. I asked myself the same thing.
I painted all the chrome parts with black trim paint (SELM) after sanding them to have more adhesion.
This is fine for the parts that won't be scratched. Some of the side windows trim now have a few scratches but I can touch-up them easily. The outside door handle are the same. Maybe I should have them powder coated.
I'm going to send my bumper to powder coating over the winter. I had to repaint the front one every year (I got the 1500 cc bumpers) because of rock chipping. The rear one still wear it's three year old pain, so it is not such a problem.
After a few year, I still love the look enough to keep it that way.

Sandblast them with a fine (read: low metal scarification) sand. My personal preference is black beauty fine sand. Alternatively, if you have access to a blast cabinet and want to spend a few bucks, walnut hulls might be good too (not sure if they have enough "oomph" to remove chrome though).
After blasting, the metal should receive 2 THIN coats of POR-15 and a coat or two of POR black chassis coat (uv coverage... the POR-15 is UV sensitive).
If you do it carefully (practice on some old stuff first) you can get a near perfect finish.

I sandblasted those bits, then primed with PPG DP90 epoxy primer, sanded a little, then topcoat with Ditzler Delstar acrylic enamel with isocyanate hardner and a flatting agent mixed in. I don't think the sandblasting is necessary; just be sure to throughly sand the surfaces to be painted. 80 grit is OK.
The bumpers are anodized aluminum, too tough to sandblast, and even tough to grind with a coarse flexible disk... I used a coarse (approx 50 grit) disk, but had to prime'n sand twice, then same topcoat as noted above. I think Daniel's point about powdercoating the front bumper is wise.
Also used same topcoat on all plastic trim after I cut the surface with coarse steelwool. Bare plastic looks grey after all these years.
I didn't want to get sand in the door handles, so scratched the chrome off by hand with 36 grit. Leave the chrome square around the keyhole chrome.
Finally, to eliminate the last hiccups from the profile, I tinted the sidemarker lights black...two light coats only. File off the lettering and sand with 1200 grit.
The targa trim can be slowly and carefully pried off. I used two wide, flat wood chisels.It snaps onto some bumps on the pinchweld flange, and that is where to pry. Locate the bumps by prying gently and you'll see where the trim is not moving.

I used fine Scotchbrite pads, primered the bumpers black, used Duplicolor Trim Paint... all in rattle cans.
Nothing flakes, and scratches and dings are easily resprayed without redoing the entire piece. Trim paint is VERY forgiving.
I also recommend their Vinyl and Fabric Spray...

The Spoiler can still be had but not at the sale price... Catalog No. 643C-10, (January 2001), pages 80 and 81.
The closest one still available to mine is on page 80, lower left corner... and it was a BMW I saw that was what I wanted to emulate... so I ordered the one of three they have available in that style.
There are 51, 53, and 56 inch long spoilers that fit numerous applications.
Mine actually measures 54 inches wide... (53 is what I was expecting) and all the other specs are right on. The primary concern before aesthetics is the span of the outer two pedestals... which are 47 inches on mine... which is what I measured on the Bimmer.
The lighted spoilet comes with three pedestals and really does need it... I hacked mine off and (spent hours) routing the wiring down through one of the outer peds...
Now I use caution when lifting the trunk lid with it... with two hands, as it does flex in the middle. Leaving the center ped in would eliminate the worry... but I didn't like the looks. The instructions even said it was OK to eliminate.
Anyway... they list only 2 part numbers, one for lighted and one unlighted (which only comes with two peds)

They also have some really neat others available... one I always liked on the Fiero for 200 bucks, another for the Mustang for 139, some tall ones for 264... down 36 bucks with LEDS.

As fo my interior... I am really impressed also... and rather embarrased to tell ya I just painted the door panels... chrome, plastic, vinyl, rubber, stainless steel, you name it... in one sweep.
I was gonna take it all apart... but tested the Duplicolor spray here and there while it was in place... then continued until it was done.
Each piece took on a different SHEEN depending on the material... I was estactic!
I pulled the seats, dash and carpet, the sprayed the entire cockpit. Looks like I re-upholstered EVERYTHING!
I do plan to find better seat covers or possibly replace the seats entirely...
I'll have to find a good deal though... but I know I can "match" the color...
