Decibel reducers...

Ok, so I have the Vics autosport racing muffler...my 20 year old self residing inside me likes it, but the 56 year old me wants to tone it down a bit...I was thinking of going to a muffler shop and finding something else, like a thrush muffler, but then someone turned me onto tailpipe inserts, and I found this one in particular called the decibel Devil. Has anyone else used one of these? I ordered it from the UK, and still waiting on it...wondering what to expect noise wise- do they really work?

I don't know anything about them, but it looks interesting. I have a fantasy about getting a couple to surreptitously install in the neighborhood boy racer cars some night. These three guys each have one of those little Asian sedans with the big wings on the back and they come and go, come and go all day long and all night long all week and weekend long. Very loud and very obnoxious. Apparently they all have some sort of active exhaust systems with the backfire-like sound. Horrible thing to inflict on the public in an age when the police no longer worry about "disturbing the peace."

Know as a "pop and bang" tune.... the younger crowd hear the current batch of WRC cars popping and banging on the over run, and actually ASK for the cars to be tuned to produce the pops and bangs on the over run ... of course a WRC car does it for a different reason (and a different method)

a potato up the exhaust pipe would be the most effective remedy.... the whole neighbourhood (except for the three youths in question) would probably applaud your effort.

I can still remember as a kid getting the "tailpipe whistle" and putting it in a neighbor lady's car...she was looking all over trying to figure out where that sound was coming from...and then a few years back it became a "craze" and the damn kids were putting them in their tailpipes on purpose- ha!
this decibel devil "looks" more effective than a vortex cone, which was another alternative

I actually saw a youtube video on how to make your car do the backfire thing with a chip for the car...also another mod to make fire come out of the exhaust, not kidding- I guess no one told these kids, that's not a good thing, lol

Ya, I have some punk across the street who's daddy gave him a 2 Series BMW. It had a rather nice sounding sport exhaust but junior want more so he did a muffler delete. Car sound like a$$ now. I guess when I was younger I did stupid things like that but after mellowing like a fine wine with age I find it rather annoying. Might have to tell the wife to get a couple extra large baking potatoes...;-)

So when I built the rotary powered X, the exhaust was incredibly loud, like even with a helmet on, it was painful. I ordered a muffler from a rotary specialist and it looked alot like what you posted, only inside of the muffler. It was a 3" straight through shot as well. I thought no way will this work, but if you pick up the muffler, and yell through one end of it, is was very quiet on the other. So, on the car it went and made a huge difference. If this does not work for you, let me know and I will try and find the link for the rotary one. Although, it will be pricey.

Bubb Rubb says "Da whistles go wooooooo!"

"Das only in the mornin'. You supposed ta be up makin' breakfast or sumthin.'

And at the end when they almost fly off the road, and then you realize they blew through that stop sign. haha.

Years ago, I used two of them in my custom built dual exhaust muffler and they really knocked down the drone and lowered the noise substantially. I believe I bought them at Summit Racing.

I had to drill into the pipes to secure them and prevent them from rattling.

Hope this helps.

Actually, the first car I bought was a Bugeye Sprite and it had few mods, pretty stock, except for a spark plug in the end of the tailpipe. I gather that it was common in the day to pull the choke out and ignite the fumes with the spark plug for the spectacular flaming effect.
