Dirt in carb. Problem resolved.

After much screwing around I put a fuel filter in the vapour return line to the carb. and this seems to have solved the problem. This weekend I was working on my 77 and I noticed that it appears to have a metal filter on the line as well. I don't know if this is standard and mine was missing one or not but it did fix the problem.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

are you talking about the fuel return to the tank which connects to the carb right next to the fuel supply line?

Or the line that connects to the carb on the left side at the throttle shaft?

The first one shouldn't have fuel flowing that direction and the second one connects to the carb throat directly, not to the fuel bowl, right?

Somehow fuel and dirt seems to have been sucked back from the tank into the carb. How or why I'm not sure but the fuel filter in the return line seems to have solved the problem. I'm assuming that the metal connector in the line on my 77 is a fuel filter but it is hard to tell. It looks like the enterprise main section (flat disk) and I have never seen a filter like it before. Anyway the 78 with the dirt problem didn't have anything in the line so I can only assume that this was the problem since the filter appears to have fixed it. That also explains why I couldn't find anything wrong with the carb. except the jets were plugging with dirt. Strange but maybe my experience will prove useful to someone else. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The 'enterpise' saucer item you are describing sounds like the 'one-way' valve that resides between the tank and the fuel pump on my Scorpion (and Betas). Its purpose (in my case) is to keep the fuel pump full after shutdown, FIAT electric fuel pumps don't seem to prime well.

The side of the unit has an arrow to show direction and one could imagine the diaphram inside. Is this what you are looking at?

If so, the valve is designed to 'suck' fuel past, not 'blow' through as to not pressurize the float bowl if tank pressures rise. It *shouldn't* work well for a return line.

I just checked mine this weekend, and the old one (from my first car, prior to fuel injection) was stuck and didn't flow very well. I guess that explains why every once and a while it seemed like the fuel pump stopped working.....
