You get it home and contact some people that know what it is that you have, only to find out that it is indeed quite rare and probably worth more (much more) than what you paid for it.
Well.... This happened to a friend of mine by the name of Michael Hartel. I will let him post the whole story of what happened, but I wanted to post some photos for us to look at.
So, here they are, they are also quite large, almost 200k for both, so be patient. The X that he bought has a turbo kit on it, and yes, it does run.

you have some interesting ideas of how this might work
This is a draw-through (vs. a blow-through system). The turbo compresses the mixture coming from the carb.
I sort of like the execution of this kit, the intake pipe and exhaust manifold look like they are well made. Of course I wonder what the long distances between the turbo and the intake and the turbo and the exhaust side would do to lag.
About fuel condensation in the black tube, I don't think so. At this point the charge is compressed by the turbo and quite warm.

, I understand the idea of mixing the fuel/air mixture from the carb with the compressed air from the turbo but how do you stop the forced turbo air finding the quickest route to freedom, i.e. back up through the carb, valves?, how would you jet the carb to stop the engine running too lean with all that extra air?
Maybe Ulix you could give a quick training course in turbo theory for us folk with enquiring minds, is fitting a turbo really that easy, by the looks of it all you need is an old turbo, some piping, a few bits of metal, a toilet roll, some sticky tape, and a welder, I'm getting exited all ready

It's really simple. It's basically a normal engine with a turbo between the carb and head.
The turbo sucks in the mixture on one side and pushes it out the other, so there is no chance of it going back out through the carb. The carb doesn't even know there is a turbo, it is just getting a stronger vacuum than it was when there was no turbo. To the carb, it feels like it was installed on a bigger engine, so it works as intended.
So there is no "extra air".
With low boost, you could probably even leave the carb jetting stock. At higher boost levels, you should monitor the exhaust temperatures and mixture and maybe go to smaller air correctors in the carbs or so.
You are right in how easy it is to turbo a motor. How good the results are is a different story
What's interesting about this setup is the remote install of the turbo. Turbo installs on X1/9s see two problems.
1) Where to put the intercooler (this system doesn't have one, which tells you something about its level of boost)
2) There is little room between the engine block and rear firewall for a turbo. This is probably why this turbo was installed on the side.

The set up in this picture is the drawthrough. this is where the carb sits infront of the turbo and adjusts it's mixture according to the air volume and then compresses it. There are two drawbacks to this method. One you need a positive sealed turbo. ( so when the throttle is closed it doesn't suck all the oil out of your motor.)Two, you can't have any manifold leaks at all, because if you have a compressed/atomized mixture and you add air, BOOM. And three ( ok I only said two, so I lied.) setting up the throttle is a bitch. And finally four, turbolag is huge. Blow through is simpler and more effective.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I was looking for a project car that needed some TLC, so while talking with a friend and co-worker, he told me that his brother had this 80 Fiat that was collecting dust in his garage.
Well at first I was not really interested in it because of all the negative things I had heard about owning a Fiat, but after a couple of weeks of thinking about it and talking with my wife we thought it might not be a bad idea to take a look at it.
We setup a time and date to see the car and when my wife looked at it she fell in love.
It needed a little TLC and a good wash job.(it was stored for 10 years and looked pretty darn bad)
We talked with the PO for awhile and settled on a price for the car and wrapped the deal up.
I went back about a week later with a trailer and loaded the little dirty X up and towed it to it's new home. Now I have never owned an Italian car and I did not have any idea what I had, all that I knew was that it had not run in 10 years and it had a turbo on it that had some of the plumbing disconnected and a few other problems, and I knew that I really needed to find someone that could help me to get the car running and tell me where I could get parts.
I stumbled across a news group for Fiat owners and posted a message saying that I had just got this 80 X19 and I needed to know where to get parts for it.
Well, the replies were numerous and one of them just happened to be from Eric Armstrong who said that he was located in the same state as I was and wanted to know where I was located.
As it turned out, Eric and I live about 17 miles from each other, so after a few emails and a couple of phone calls we made plans to meet.
When Eric saw the car he told me that I had something that was quite unique and rare.
Now this car had been a daily driver with the turbo on it prior to being put in storage, so I knew that it had run and that the setup did indeed work, but after sitting for 10 years without being turned over I was not so sure that it would still work. Eric said all we can do is try it and see, so a few weeks went past and I slowly started putting all the plumbing back together and soaked the cylinders down and called Eric to come over and we got the motor to turn over by hand. By this time, we were getting excited because things were starting to look up, so we stuck a battery in the car and cranked it over and after about 30 or 40 minutes it fired. We shut it down as soon as it started because I was still missing a few fittings for the oil supply to the turbo. By this time, I think that Eric was more excited than I was, we called it a night and planned to meet again when I had the oil supply line hooked up.
Well, I got all the plumbing and lines hooked up this weekend and got the car started on Saturday afternoon.
I called Eric and said do you hear that???????
and he replied I'll be there in about 30 minutes.
Well, I think it only took him about 10 minutes to get to my place and when he rolled up, I had the X out of the garage and sitting in the driveway running.
We did a few adjustments on it and then took it for a ride.
It ran great up to about 4500 RPM and then the turbo kicked in....WOW what a ride.

Anyway, your turbo X would be a natural for the Fifth Annual Fiat Oregon Gathering and Hillclimb, happening July 12-16 near Ashland Oregon. You probably have one of a handful turbo X in this country. I have heard of a couple that existed at some time, but never known anyone who had one or seen one in the flesh.
If you find out any more details, let us know. Also, if you have some pictures of the car, post them. Is the rest of the car modified?

you have some interesting ideas of how this might work
This is a draw-through (vs. a blow-through system). The turbo compresses the mixture coming from the carb.
I sort of like the execution of this kit, the intake pipe and exhaust manifold look like they are well made. Of course I wonder what the long distances between the turbo and the intake and the turbo and the exhaust side would do to lag.
About fuel condensation in the black tube, I don't think so. At this point the charge is compressed by the turbo and quite warm.

It's really simple. It's basically a normal engine with a turbo between the carb and head.
The turbo sucks in the mixture on one side and pushes it out the other, so there is no chance of it going back out through the carb. The carb doesn't even know there is a turbo, it is just getting a stronger vacuum than it was when there was no turbo. To the carb, it feels like it was installed on a bigger engine, so it works as intended.
So there is no "extra air".
With low boost, you could probably even leave the carb jetting stock. At higher boost levels, you should monitor the exhaust temperatures and mixture and maybe go to smaller air correctors in the carbs or so.
You are right in how easy it is to turbo a motor. How good the results are is a different story
What's interesting about this setup is the remote install of the turbo. Turbo installs on X1/9s see two problems.
1) Where to put the intercooler (this system doesn't have one, which tells you something about its level of boost)
2) There is little room between the engine block and rear firewall for a turbo. This is probably why this turbo was installed on the side.

The turbo is smaller (it's actually the same as fitted to the Maserati Biturbo - except that uses two of them, if you hadn't guessed from the name). The system works very well, 120bhp+ from a 1100 engine with just over 1 bar compression - but that is a race car, the road going version is somewhat milder!

The set up in this picture is the drawthrough. this is where the carb sits infront of the turbo and adjusts it's mixture according to the air volume and then compresses it. There are two drawbacks to this method. One you need a positive sealed turbo. ( so when the throttle is closed it doesn't suck all the oil out of your motor.)Two, you can't have any manifold leaks at all, because if you have a compressed/atomized mixture and you add air, BOOM. I was looking for a project car that needed some TLC, so while talking with a friend and co-worker, he told me that his brother had this 80 Fiat that was collecting dust in his garage.
Well at first I was not really interested in it because of all the negative things I had heard about owning a Fiat, but after a couple of weeks of thinking about it and talking with my wife we thought it might not be a bad idea to take a look at it.
We setup a time and date to see the car and when my wife looked at it she fell in love.
It needed a little TLC and a good wash job.(it was stored for 10 years and looked pretty darn bad)
We talked with the PO for awhile and settled on a price for the car and wrapped the deal up.
I went back about a week later with a trailer and loaded the little dirty X up and towed it to it's new home. Now I have never owned an Italian car and I did not have any idea what I had, all that I knew was that it had not run in 10 years and it had a turbo on it that had some of the plumbing disconnected and a few other problems, and I knew that I really needed to find someone that could help me to get the car running and tell me where I could get parts.
I stumbled across a news group for Fiat owners and posted a message saying that I had just got this 80 X19 and I needed to know where to get parts for it.
Well, the replies were numerous and one of them just happened to be from Eric Armstrong who said that he was located in the same state as I was and wanted to know where I was located.
As it turned out, Eric and I live about 17 miles from each other, so after a few emails and a couple of phone calls we made plans to meet.
When Eric saw the car he told me that I had something that was quite unique and rare.
Now this car had been a daily driver with the turbo on it prior to being put in storage, so I knew that it had run and that the setup did indeed work, but after sitting for 10 years without being turned over I was not so sure that it would still work. Eric said all we can do is try it and see, so a few weeks went past and I slowly started putting all the plumbing back together and soaked the cylinders down and called Eric to come over and we got the motor to turn over by hand. By this time, we were getting excited because things were starting to look up, so we stuck a battery in the car and cranked it over and after about 30 or 40 minutes it fired. We shut it down as soon as it started because I was still missing a few fittings for the oil supply to the turbo. By this time, I think that Eric was more excited than I was, we called it a night and planned to meet again when I had the oil supply line hooked up.
Well, I got all the plumbing and lines hooked up this weekend and got the car started on Saturday afternoon.
I called Eric and said do you hear that???????
and he replied I'll be there in about 30 minutes.
Well, I think it only took him about 10 minutes to get to my place and when he rolled up, I had the X out of the garage and sitting in the driveway running.
We did a few adjustments on it and then took it for a ride.
It ran great up to about 4500 RPM and then the turbo kicked in....WOW what a ride.

Anyway, your turbo X would be a natural for the Fifth Annual Fiat Oregon Gathering and Hillclimb, happening July 12-16 near Ashland Oregon. Turbocars are especially suited for hillclimbing...4800 ft elevation thin air reduces horsepower for naturally aspirated cars. Kinda like Pike's Peak, but paved.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You probably have one of a handful turbo X in this country. I have heard of a couple that existed at some time, but never known anyone who had one or seen one in the flesh.
If you find out any more details, let us know. Also, if you have some pictures of the car, post them. Is the rest of the car modified?
