I have been an X1/9 fan for most of my driving life. I have owned my '75 since 1990. I got online for the first time about 2 years ago. Ever since then I have heard, every so often, talk of a car made in Brazil, around the same time that X1/9s were made, that was almost an exact duplicate of an X1/9. The car - the Dardo - has long been a bit mysterious to me. I have heard many in X1/9 groups around the world asking things about it over the last couple years, and not too many answers are known generally from what I gather.
After as much fun as we all had around here during the research on the weird/poorly documented 'LTD/IN/VS' X1/9 series of 500 cars, I was quite stoked when I recently received an email from alert Xhead, JKrass, regarding the somewhat mysterious "Dardo" cars of Brazil.
Thanks to that email, we now have actual pictures of these cars! I must admit though that the pictures are multi-generation duplicates, so the quality is not so great, but to Mr. Krass' credit, he was able to scan them to me with no worse quality than he received them in.
What's more, included was an article from what appears to have been a British-published car magazine circa 1980, about YET ANOTHER Brazilian X look-alike car that I had never before heard of! A car that, in fact, isn't even a take-off of the X, but of the Dardo itself! This rare bird is called the Dardo 'Montserrat' and the article covers both cars, as well as some of the differences from the X1/9. Wow! We finally have some decent info on these rare Brazilian X-alikes...
The text from the document was badly degraded, so much so that it was difficult for either of us to read. In an effort to help get the info out clearly, I have JPEGed each page separately, and have rewritten all of the garbled English text with image manipulation so it can be read freely.
And if all that wasn't enough, we even have - for those of you who know the language, specs on the standard Dardo car in French and German! *
