Furthermore, the little dab of paint I had on it aligning it the the crankshaft is gone (apparently same off during the PBS weightloss program). So, how do I know if I'm putting of the flywheel the right way? Also, I've never used the flywheel to check timing, so I'm not sure of what the implications are of not have the timing mark in the right place.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->First off, on a 1500, the pointer for the timing mark on the front pully is ADJUSTABLE!!!! So if you don't have a timing mark on your flywheel, then you don't have an accurate timing mark.
About the only thing to do, that I would trust, is to mount a stock flywheel on motor and verify that the position of the timing mark is in the correct location. This is easy because the flywheel will really only go on in two positions and one is 180 out. Mark a tooth on the ring gear near the timing mark and make a corresponding reference mark on the rear of the block next to that tooth.
Now install your lightened flywheel and mark the tooth next to your reference mark. Next pull the flywheel of and lay it on top of the stock one and line up the center holes and reference marks. Finally, note the position of the factory timing mark and make a corresponding mark on the lightened flywheel. Once marked, use a center punch to punch a good mark and if you want, hit it with your drill to make it look factory.

The 0/180 degree orientation of the flywheel to crank is accomplished by the polygon formed by the bolt pattern.

I drew a sketch of the balance holes on the flywheel prior to sending it off to be shaved. The crank did not rotate in the interim. I reinstalled the flywheel based on the sketch orientation.
But I did ignore the timing mark. Perhaps it was removed during machining. perhaps not.
I agree with your re-establishing the mark process. Good ole haynes refrenced all the timing activity to be done from the pulley end. Now you mention timing the motor from the flywheel end......

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It is the POINTER that is adjustable. The pointer is a small stamping with mounting holes at either end. It is these two mounting holes on either end that are slotted. The pully is keyed and does not move on the crank.
On a 1300, the pointer is located on the timing belt cover. So it is necessary to install the lower half of the cover to have a crank pointer on the front of the motor.
For the sake of accuracy, I ALWAYS use the flywheel mark.
Also, if you want to save your timing mark before sending the flywheel off to PBS, simply make a corresponding mark on the ring gear before shipping it off.

You will find that there are several degrees of crankshaft rotation while the piston is more or less stationary. So finding TDC requires the use of a degree wheel and a piston stop. This is the only accurate method of determining TDC without a timing mark.
When you make your mark, make it correspond to the crank pully mark. That way you won't have two marks 180 apart.

And secondly... since crank timing is so critical from the flywheel... I should think the folks that lightened it the first place would 1) take that and the owner in consideration, and 2) MAKE IT RIGHT!
Seems like a couple of strokes with a punch and hammer on the flywheel gear (either by the owner or the machinist) could save a whole lotta trouble!

Also, I've never used the flywheel to check timing, so I'm not sure of what the implications are of not have the timing mark in the right place.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->First off, on a 1500, the pointer for the timing mark on the front pully is ADJUSTABLE!!!! So if you don't have a timing mark on your flywheel, then you don't have an accurate timing mark.
About the only thing to do, that I would trust, is to mount a stock flywheel on motor and verify that the position of the timing mark is in the correct location. This is easy because the flywheel will really only go on in two positions and one is 180 out. Mark a tooth on the ring gear near the timing mark and make a corresponding reference mark on the rear of the block next to that tooth.
Now install your lightened flywheel and mark the tooth next to your reference mark. Next pull the flywheel of and lay it on top of the stock one and line up the center holes and reference marks. Finally, note the position of the factory timing mark and make a corresponding mark on the lightened flywheel. Once marked, use a center punch to punch a good mark and if you want, hit it with your drill to make it look factory.

I drew a sketch of the balance holes on the flywheel prior to sending it off to be shaved. The crank did not rotate in the interim. I reinstalled the flywheel based on the sketch orientation.
But I did ignore the timing mark. Perhaps it was removed during machining. perhaps not.
I agree with your re-establishing the mark process. Good ole haynes refrenced all the timing activity to be done from the pulley end. Now you mention timing the motor from the flywheel end......

On a 1300, the pointer is located on the timing belt cover. So it is necessary to install the lower half of the cover to have a crank pointer on the front of the motor.
For the sake of accuracy, I ALWAYS use the flywheel mark.
Also, if you want to save your timing mark before sending the flywheel off to PBS, simply make a corresponding mark on the ring gear before shipping it off.

You will find that there are several degrees of crankshaft rotation while the piston is more or less stationary. So finding TDC requires the use of a degree wheel and a piston stop. This is the only accurate method of determining TDC without a timing mark.
When you make your mark, make it correspond to the crank pully mark. That way you won't have two marks 180 apart.

And secondly... since crank timing is so critical from the flywheel... I should think the folks that lightened it the first place would 1) take that and the owner in consideration, and 2) MAKE IT RIGHT!
Seems like a couple of strokes with a punch and hammer on the flywheel gear (either by the owner or the machinist) could save a whole lotta trouble!
I'll certainly file this "key learning" away!!!
