This leak probably caused the PO to over heat it and caused the headgasket failure I posted earlier and am now fixing.

The leak is comming from the Oil cooler? It is an aluminum housing with the coolant lines from the intake and exhaust manifolds running to it. There also appears to be a large diaphram mounted on top of the aluminum housing. It is bolted to the aft side of the engine. I removed it today, and there is a large crack running all over the outside of the housing.

Has anyone seen this before? What caused it to fail? Maybe the engine overheated first and caused the crack?I was considering taking the cooler to a Aluminum welder to weld up the crack. Any ideas?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Dale, I take it that this is a 1.5 with a carb? If so, that diaphram is an EGR valve and yes, the passages are water cooled!! If it were mine, I would remove the valve and plug the coolant and intake and exhaust passages. End of problem, cleaner look, and no EGR.

Harbor Freight has them for about 6 bucks a set... great for cleaning up stuff.

You should find that the hole is ALREADY threaded and you can install a 13mm head bolt with a copper washer and silecone sealant... or install another bleed valve like the one just to the right of it on the block.

I just removed ALL of my stuff and then ran the lines directly to the choke and back... corked up all the rest. I bet I dumped about 80 pounds of junk...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I can completely remove this aluminum housing, EGR diaphram and mess of tubes and simply block all the remaining open ports? This won't disrupt coolant flow-through the intake manifold?

I haven't seen the 13mm bolt threads you were talking about, then again, I haven't run a tap into the block yet.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Like I said... I took one line off the water pump bar and ran it to the choke and outta the choke back into the intake manifold.

That's the only water circulation source you need outside of the engine... besides the heater.

The EGR just took advantage of a "tap" into a water jacket.

The EGR bolts to the side of the block with 4-13mm bolts and the FIFTH hole is the water tap... should leak nicely for you when you remove the EGR. (I had to split (unbolt) the EGR in order to reach two of the 4 bolts)

I believe I used a 10mm tap to attempt to thread the hole so I could plug it... I didn't see any threads either... but it tapped SO EASY it must have been threaded originally! Looking to the right where the block peacock is... it makes sense.

The rest of the stuff took some work also... I kept the crankcase vent to the air cleaner, I plugged the inlet in the head where the AIR pump discharged into with a Metric oil drain plug... and kept the fume separators on the tank and then routed the output that went to the canister directly into a bib on the carb air horn... which used to be connected to the canister.

I also removed the header heat shield, all the vacuum stuff, and electric switch, tied the remaining four carb vacuum bibs together two by two with a loop of tubing... left the stock vacuum hose to the distributor alone.

That's all I can think of now... see my thread on Cats and test pipe fabrication for the rest.

Well worth the effort. Runs better, idles better, more MPG I'm sure... haven't got thru this tank yet... ANd with all the space you gain and the weight you loose... all adds up to more ponies for less weight!

Best Regards,

Tony Natoli
