Front suspension confusion

To lower the front of my 128 from it's sky high attitude I got X rear struts and X rear springs. Something is not right since I have about 3/4" of free spring height, in other words, with everything assembled using 128 front top mounts the spring has about 3/4" space between the top of the spring and the bottom of the mount. I don't recall having this situation on my last 128 with the same mod. There should clearly be some tension on the spring since it is stock and not cut.

Yeah if it's all stock X stuff there should be some preload. Maybe they're not really rear springs? Do the struts have inserts?

The struts are Monroes that came with the car and the springs came from my request here for a pair. Guess it's time to take some measurements. The car sits nice so I like the combo. Ultimately I may just make spacers to go between the top spring perch and the body mounts to take up the slack.
