I have a new "problem" (not really) with my X... when I turn the key off, the car doesn't shut off until I remove the key from the lock cylinder! Oddly enough, the radio, heater, etc... shut off when I turn the key off, but the motor keeps running!

Odd eh? I think I can live with it... unless anyone has a reason why this should be fixed. I can't see why it would be a probelm tho.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->At the end of your ignition barrel there is a switch block which contains the actual electrics for your ignition switch. The actual lock itself does very little except provide a steering lock. Anyone with a screwdriver could remove the block and twist the contacts to the run stage!

The innards of the switch contain a couple of rotary switches to provide the accessory, ignition and starter motor circuits with power. It is quite possible that one of the rotors is damaged and is not releasing or is shorting until the key is removed allowing every thing to spring back (since the lock is sprung while the key is in place and turned.

The Haynes manuals show this switch with just four contacts (which is what I remember it having). What the Haynes manual doesn't show you is how to remove the switch - the problem here is that the switch is covered by the bracket for the ignition/steering lock which is bolted in with snap-head bolts making it nearly impossible to remove the whole thing without a breakage. If you're really lucky the heads won't be snapped off - otherwise you will have to either smash the lock (not difficult - a heavy screwdriver is sufficient) or drill the bolts out with a stud extractor and then replace them with ordinary bolts. Now you're probably thinking that you're going to wreck your car and it'll never work again. Take another look at your wiring diagram and you will see that the switch goes straight into a connector block which easily unplugs. Disconnect this and you have direct access to the three controlling circuits - all you need now is four lengths of wire and the wiring diagram to make sure you connect things the right way. Alternatively if you have access to a spare switch, just plug it in and simply twist to make sure things work. If your car is still running when you disconnect the ignition circuit then you have a real problem and your ignition system is drawing power from elsewhere (I can't imagine this - and I'm pretty sure you will have to remove and replace the current switch). You see - hotwiring a car is so incredibly easy it makes you wonder why more cars aren't stolen........

and I want to make it very clear that I do NOT steal cars and would not consider it. I would like to say that I am NOT happy that it IS so easy to do and why is it that car manufacturers are so reluctant to do something about it!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi all!

Yes, to hotwire an X1/9 is not too hard for someone with any electrical inclination, but (before anyone gets too nervous) it's much the same story with almost every other car out there, as Julian mentioned.

Personally, I am not worried. If someone is willing to smash my ignition lock to steal a car, more complex wiring would not be much of a deterrant IMHO ;)

Anyhow, these snap-head bolts that hold the keyswitch assembly together are the part that most folks dislike. If the heads are still on then you are lucky enough to win the Lottery! Some folks drill 'em out, which works but can be a pain in the rump. I have found a way that works well for me: I got one of those little Dremel tools (small hand tool with a selection of tiny bits). I use the little rotary cutting-wheel bit and with this it is very easy to cut a slot in the flat face of the headless bolt. Then any standard (aka 'flathead') screwdriver will back them right out.

At any rate, It is possible the contacts inside the electrical portion are pooped. You might be able to pop it open and put things right... if it is in-fact the switch. -Mac.

I hope this is the case as I want to remove the standard ignition barrel switch from the racer and replace it with a push button and toggle switch arrangement (much safer when racing than having a key sticking out!)
