The other thing I would check is the condition of the engine. Check the compression in all cylinders. If they are relatively the same, and of appropriate numbers, then the engine should be O.K. Even if the engine isn't in the best shape, you can find all kinds of parts for the mechanical aspects of the car. Beware though, there isn't a lot out on the market for interior and major body panel repair.
Drive the car. If it runs good and you like the feel (which I think you probably will), then by all means buy it.

All the manuals tell you to adjust the shift linkage with the shift lever in neutral. This did not work in my case as my X always wanted to stay in 4th gear, no reverse! OK" I said to myself, Self"" If this sucker wants to go into 4th all the time,instead of reverse I'll just adjust the linkage with it in 4th gear. With the shifter and tranny in 4th I disconnected the linkage and adjusted the shims so there was no binding and tightened her up. That solved the problem! I now have all the gears. One thing that seems to me to be a fact that there are no two Exxeys alike in the whole world. At least it sounds like it. Hope this helps. Wouldn't go over 85 mph but LEAPED across intersections! HA... in LA-LA land that's all ya needed!)

Linkage adjustments are an occasional problem with the 4 speed transmission ('74-'78s are 4 spds). The most common internal problem is the third gear synchronizer. Third and 4th gears use the "Porsche Type" snychros. This wear quickly and once they begin to weaken less than carefull shifting can cause damage to the gear and slider. The only fix is tearing it down and replacing the damaged parts.
Third is always the first to go in a 4 spd, so if it is good, then the rest probably is too. If third is weak then check out the rest of the shifts too.
Adicted? To X1/9s??? Nooooo! Doesn't happen.... Why I was able to get by with only two Xs for almost two years. Now I am back to five, but soon that will be only four, so that isn't alot. Besides, I could really get by with just three, but I got the other two in a package deal so I HAD to take them to get the one I wanted. And I REALLY don't have to have them, I COULD quit any time I wanted too.... You know how it is, am I rambling on here....

The other thing I would check is the condition of the engine. Check the compression in all cylinders. If they are relatively the same, and of appropriate numbers, then the engine should be O.K. Even if the engine isn't in the best shape, you can find all kinds of parts for the mechanical aspects of the car. Beware though, there isn't a lot out on the market for interior and major body panel repair.
Drive the car. If it runs good and you like the feel (which I think you probably will), then by all means buy it.

My wife wanted her parking spot back. Well she got to park in the garage for about 2 weeks. Now she's back in the driveway....but she can't complain because we just bought our second X and guess what.....It's hers.

I heard something about a very common X1/9 transmission problem with shifting into 2'nd and Reverse. Is this true? Right now I'm in the process of making arrangements to meet with the owner so I can check it out and possibly purchase it. I just wanted to do a little research before I buy one. I've drove X1/9's before in the past and I just love them! I'm already addicted and I don't even own one yet. I'll keep you guys updated. I'm so excited about this X1/9. All the manuals tell you to adjust the shift linkage with the shift lever in neutral. This did not work in my case as my X always wanted to stay in 4th gear, no reverse! OK" I said to myself, Self"" If this sucker wants to go into 4th all the time,instead of reverse I'll just adjust the linkage with it in 4th gear. With the shifter and tranny in 4th I disconnected the linkage and adjusted the shims so there was no binding and tightened her up. That solved the problem! I now have all the gears. One thing that seems to me to be a fact that there are no two Exxeys alike in the whole world. At least it sounds like it. Hope this helps. Wouldn't go over 85 mph but LEAPED across intersections! HA... in LA-LA land that's all ya needed!)
I was 11 when I put a clutch in that with my 10 year old brother... and took it for a test drive...

Linkage adjustments are an occasional problem with the 4 speed transmission ('74-'78s are 4 spds). The most common internal problem is the third gear synchronizer. Third and 4th gears use the "Porsche Type" snychros. This wear quickly and once they begin to weaken less than carefull shifting can cause damage to the gear and slider. The only fix is tearing it down and replacing the damaged parts.
Third is always the first to go in a 4 spd, so if it is good, then the rest probably is too. If third is weak then check out the rest of the shifts too.
Adicted? To X1/9s??? Nooooo! Doesn't happen.... Why I was able to get by with only two Xs for almost two years. Now I am back to five, but soon that will be only four, so that isn't alot. Besides, I could really get by with just three, but I got the other two in a package deal so I HAD to take them to get the one I wanted. And I REALLY don't have to have them, I COULD quit any time I wanted too.... You know how it is, am I rambling on here....
