I fixed the problem with my fuel system, and now my car runs better than ever!! Thanks a bunch for your help (the only downside is that I will never get that gasoline smell off me, ever!).
Well, now I am going to tackle some other more simple stuff. I want to change the transmission oil (I don't know the last time it was done, but the previous owner did take good care of the car). However, I haven't been able to find any of this "GL-1" stuff that the book recommends. All I can find is GL-5. What is the difference? Will one harm my transmission?
Also, Mercedes Benz now recommends that for their older (70's and 80's) cars with standard transmission that the owners use automatic transmission fluid (my father has a '85 280SL Euro Benz, and it's shifter is incredibly smooth and the trasmission is amazing!). Would auto transmission fluid do any good in a standard transmission car such as the X1/9?
Also, sometimes there is a grinding noise when I shift into 3rd. If I push the shift stick much futher to the right, the noise doesn't happen. However, I don't think I should have to move the stick to the right limit of 3rd gear, any ideas on what is wrong.
Sometimes when I shift into 1st while the car is still rolling (1 or 2 MPH), there is a vibrating and grinding. Most of the time I will just start in 2nd gear when that happens, but, any ideas?
Most of the problems have only some of the time, so it is not that bad.
Thanks a bunch!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Michael-

I'll defer to Steve H. on your tranny fluid questions - he's the X1/9 transmission god.

As far as grinding, it can be one of two things:

1) there is a little linkage in the transmission tunnel (usually refered to as the Lollipop here on the forum) that can get out of wack. This will typically cause shifting problems, but usually will effect a range of gears, not just one. Therefore, I suspect #2 is the problem...

2) Third gear synchro is shot... this is a common problem. I think most of us have had it at one time or another. I choose to live with mine, as it hasn't gotten any worse since I bought the car
happy.gif
To fix it, a transmission rebuild is necessary. A quick test... when you are about to shift into third, push the clutch in, but don't shift immediately... on my car, if I let the engine spool down a bit, it won't grind going into gear. I suspect that this will not be the case if you are badly worn.

Cheers,

Doc<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->On the transmission fluid question, do not use ATF in your X1/9 transmission. I know it is common in some manuals (Late model Ranger pickups for one) but it is not suited for your X. I know a number of people that swear by GL1 and there is much debate on this subject. However, from my experience, you have three options: 1) find GL1. It can be purchased from a number of Fiat specific suppliers (check the vendor list on this page). I do not recommend GL1. GL1 is 60 year old technology and lubricants have made major improvements in only the last 10 years, not to mention the 50 before that. 2) Use a quality motor oil. 20/50 motor oil works well in the X transmission. A quality petrolium or synthetic is fine. I used this for years in my everyday driver. 3) Use RedLine Synthetic MT-90 or MTL. This is my recommendation. Yes it is more expensive, but it is by far the best performing lubricant I have ever used in an X transmission.

Do not use GL-5 in it. There are additives in the GL-5 that will attack the synchronizers.

As for your problems with 1st and 3rd. If the suggestions in the earlier posts don't solve the problem, and I doubt they will, then you have a weak synchro on 1st and a worn synchro and slider on third. A change of fluid may improve the shifting some, but nothing short of a proper repair will fix it. The reason 3rd works better when you move the shifter over further is it takes you longer to make the shift that way and that gives the input shaft more time to spin down. 1st and 3rd are common weak points in the 5 spd gearbox. If you want to have it last as long as possible then learn to shift it so that it doesn't grind. This will slow down the wear.

Good Luck

Steve

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Not to re-launch the great gear oil debate, but Redline synthetic is the way to go. It's the only thing I put in X's that I service.

A warning about 1st gear. DO NOT downshift into 1st at anything above a walking speed!!! 1st has a synchro identical to the one on 2nd. The problem is that engaging 1st, engages two of the three reverse gears (the 1-2 sleeve has the reverse teeth on it's outside). When you downshift from 2nd to 1st, the 1-2 sleeve is rotating(how fast depends on how fast the car is going), and the reverse idler is just sitting there. This will damage the teeth on the sleeve and mostly the reverse idler... not good.
This is not to say that the synchro can't wear out on first.. the test is with the car warm and at idle, depress the clutch and quickly shift to first. If it grinds then, you have a worn synchro. If it's ok then, but you hear a light "clash" noise when downshifting from 2nd to 1st, that's the sound of the reverse gears,

There are litterally hundreds of miracle additives on the market. Every day I get someone in my shop that has tried these, including Lucas.
