Girling Rear Calipers - Non-X

Low Mileage
The handbrake on my '89 Croma is not working. The rear calipers are Girling units similar to the ones shown on this page:

The handbrake cable is adjusted as far as it will go with the adjuster at the handrake lever. Looking at the calipers, it would appear the cable simply cannot be pulled any tighter. I guess there must be some way of adjusting the mechanism within the caliper.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

The handbrake should run a threaded adjuster inside like the calipers on the rear of an X1/9. The pistons and adjuster will get stiff over time and fail to adjust as the pads wear. Usually just threading the piston all the way in and then back out a ways and repeating this several times will free them up. You will need a brake piston tool to do this. I have this problem all the time on the Girling's on my saab and have made it a point to cycle those every year or so as it is my winter car mainly as sees more salt than the dead sea.
