i'm trying to forget the problems with my '78.

this post is about the '87.

i got the new clutch in this past weekend.
so i'm practically on the road.

bad news is that the slave cylinder wound up being bunged-up.

it is somewhat likely that i did not need a clutch
after all. ...ugh

the rubber seal on the end of the slave had evaporated long ago, and there was a lot of oxidation and crap in the cylinder.

i did not realise how far the plunger might travel inside the cylinder, but this crud was apparently blocking the plunger from traveling far enough to
release the *brand-new* clutch, with the nut
at maximum adjustment...

i was able to clean out the inside of the cylinder using a mixture of brake fluid and WD-40 and a piece of light steel wool on a stick...

the car is now driveable (hooray!),
but i'm afraid it might get stuck again, either
engaged of disingaged. so a new slave is in the mail.

one giant step forward, one baby step back...<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->one other potential problem with my '87
is that there is water (coolant?) collecting
in the recess behind/below the spare tire compartment.

with the spare tire out (and any panels or insulation removed, there is an oval hole
where you can see into the space between the firewall. there is water in there.

now i just got finished power washing the car,
so it could be from that, but it does smell
a little like antifreeze.
it doesn't taste sweet like AF, though.

this doesn't prove much, since the cooling system was rather low, and did appear to be a weak mixture...(mostly water).

in any case, i did try to check the heater hose that goes thru the firewall just above the
area in question, but i can find no evidence
that the leak is there.
i was able to pull the hose more than 1/2 way out
in both directions for inspection.
no leaks, no drips....

however, the hose does continue across the spare tire compartment and dissappears into the "hump"
in the middle of the car.

maybe it is leaking there?

or maybe the other cooling lines are leaking
and somehow the water is finding its way to this area.

but this is the only place where it is leaking out of the body...

any ideas?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Bob,
If the water in the spare tire compartment is indeed coolant from the engine, the only source of it would be from the heater hose you mentioned that runs across the back. To be safe and for peace of mind, I'd suggest you change it out, especially if it has been there for a number of years. You'll need a piece of 5/8" heater hose about 6 ft. long. The easy end connects to the rear of the cylinder head and the hard end connects to a steel line directly below your emergency brake handle. It's really not all that bad to change out. The only part that's a bit of a challenge is feeding it into the center tunnel and getting the end of it up to the steel line. Good luck,
Kelly<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

pretty sure it is a coolant leak.

but i did have a lot of water collecting

thanks for the info.

i'll have to pick up some heater hose.

(i'm also pretending i didn't see the coolant weeping from the water pump escape hole...)

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have heard some reports from owners that water can sometimes collect in the bottom of the spare tire compartment by entering through the engine bay. If there is a poor seal at the distributor access hole, or the hose running through, or if anyone has passed wires through, that water can come in from outside (rain, carwash etc) and will run down any item passing through the firewall, to collect in the compartment.

I would definitely suspect the heater hose first, but as a secondary suspect, you should check all the items passing into the compartment from the engine bay just to make sure that rain water is not running down anything and dripping in. Just a thought
