I have a couple of G.E. halogen headlights that will fit but I seem to remember somebody saying that they draw more current and may burn out the wiring.
Are these ok to use?

I am also a little concerned about my alternator since the needle is just above the red zone at the bottom when I have lights, wipers and heater fan on and the little red light glows dimly.
What does the meter measure (voltage output or battery voltage?) and why does the light glow (undervoltage?). Thanks for getting me out of the dark. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Anyway, as far as your question about the ammeter... It sounds to me like you have a parasitic drain. Try this: Turn on each item seperately... I would be willing to be that the meter will drop off suddenly when you turn on one of them (most likely the wipers - both my X and my Maserati have the same problem, and I once owned a Peugeot that stalled when the wipers were turned to "high"... maybe I just have back luck with wipers! :) ). You will then know your culprit. If it is the wipers, run them on low, and keep a careful eye on the meter... it will drop when the wipers are in motion, and return to normal when the wiper goes to the "resting" position. I haven't tracked down the source of it in my car yet (grounds are good, so it may be the wiper motor itself).

The wipers drop it some, the fan blower drops it a lot, and the combination drops it more. Since the drop seems to be proportional to the current draw of the device I assumed this was normal with fiats. It suffers from bad designed light switches, missing relays for the normal driving lights and bad terminal quality.

Furthermore halogens need more than just 12V, they need about 13Volt to operate on a bright level. Until you install relays for the lights I wouldn't recommend any brighter or stronger halogen bulbs.

This equates to an extra 5W in both dipped and full beam settings (roughly 0.5A). It is highly unlikely that you would slag the wiring, but the dipped beam switch would soon fail leaving you with a melted column switch.
Your X should be delivering a whole 13.4V when the engine is running anyway, but most X's seem to be running with rather inadequate bridge rectifiers on the alternator which results in inadequate voltage (and current). The end result is commonly a dimly glowing charge light that slowly gets brighter as the rectifier gets worse (sound familiar). The additional relay needed for the dipped beam is incredibly easy to fit and simply requires a few lengths of new wire and for a couple of wires to be unplugged from the fusebox. A ready made 'driving light' kit is perfect for this as it includes everything you need. The trick is to use the existing wiring as the trigger for the new relay and feed the switched circuit from the relay back into the old wiring for the lights so all you need to do is run a live connection to the relay from the battery for the light power on the switched side of the relay (not the fusebox) and an earth from the relay to the chassis (on the control side), the remaining control wiring needs to come from the column switch (you have a choice of two wires - but make sure you disconnect BOTH from the fusebox), these connections (both of them) should be replaced with a feed from the switched side of the relay thereby completing the circuit. It's a good idea to include an extra fuse into the circuit between the relay and the battery to prevent a burn-out in the relay in the event that the whole thing goes badly wrong.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

University physics was a long time ago and I can't remember the formula for calculating the current. P=VI rings a bell but this would give me 55wats/12volts=I which is 4.2. Reality tells me that the headlights dont draw 4 amps.
Guess I shouldn't have killed so many brain cells in the pubs.

Resistance is a measure expressed in Ohms and is represented by "R" or by the Greek symbol Omega (sorry, no Omega on my keyboard!)...

With that in mind, the equations for finding voltage, current or resistance are:

Voltage = Current times Resistance
Current = Voltage over Resistance
Resistance = Voltage over Current

Expressed in formulas it goes:

V=IxR
I=V/R
R=V/I

If you want to find any one unknown component you must know the other 2, then use the correct formula.

That's all academic though, so let's toss in a few factuals...

Stu, your car is a 1300cc, right? On the 1500cc cars there is a VOLTmeter there on the dash, with a red light in the bottom corner of the gauge that indicates LOW CURRENT (AMPS), but on the 1300cc cars, there is no voltmeter, instead that meter is for PSI on engine oil pressure, with the light in the bottom corner indicating low pressure. On the 1300s there is a separate indicator light marked "G" or "A" for LOW CURRENT (AMPS).

So in the 1300, there is no voltage indicator. If the alternator light glows in varying intensity it could be...

A> A loose or slipping alternator belt. Check this first as it is the most common cause. The belt should be tight *but not overtight* or you will burn out the bearings in the alternator. When properly tightened the belt should deflect roughly 1/2 inch when pressed up on (from below car) between the alt & water pump.

B> The next likely suspect is the brushes in the alternator (or if a 1500cc, the brushes are attached to the voltage regulator, mounted to the alternator). If this is it, it is easy enough to take the alt. apart and put new brush in (or if 1500 just replace the voltage regulator - easy!) but if you are still running your original alternator on a 1300, I would recommend anyway to replace it with the alt from a 1500 so you can get the higher current output of the later unit, as well as the ease of brush replacement and the VR being mounted right to the unit.

C> If not belt or brush, then it may just be the bridge rectifier diodes in the Alternator, as Julian mentioned earlier. Just get a 1500 alternator! :)

Poke around a little there and see what you come up with. Check the belt and let us know what you see. There are actually more possibilities than this which might cause the light to glow, but let's not dig deeper than required.

Let us know what you find. On the note of the headlights, get a 1500 alternator (!) and then hook up relays and get yourself some Hella or similar Euro-style high intensity lights. Brighter for same-ish current draw. It's a winning combo. -Mac.

It tops at 16 and I think 10 is the bottom and the needle moves based on what electrical devices I turn on and off. It cant be oil pressure because I replaced the idiot light with a proper pressure guage and the old sending unit is no longer hooked up.
I think the idea of a 1500 alternator is a good one now I just have to find one. The belt is properly adjusted and most of the time the red light is out for normal (low electrical load) driving.
I will check out some headlights but I suspect they will be more than I paid for the car so I may just go for the relay and use the G.E. halogens.

AFAIK no 1300s ever came with the voltmeter.

Please remember that the normal "running" voltage is actually closer to 13.5amps though so the current would be marginally over 4amps (not 4.2). Don't forget that this is per bulb as well so your headlights will be drawing a little over 8 amps on full beam and just under 7.5 amps on dipped!

I have usually found that streaking is caused as the spring that holds the wiper arm down wears out... it doesn't hold to the window as tightly then.


As far as blades, I just use the Anco refills from Walmart (except during the winter - I switch to a winter blade so it doesn't clog up with ice... won't matter for the X tho, as it will go into the barn with the old cars for the winter).

Most places in the world this would have caused a major flood but all it did was raise the river levels out here.
How hard does it rain?
1) My carb. needs a snorkel to go through the puddles.
2) You have to keep your windows up to keep the fish out of the car.
3) You have to let air out of your tires to keep the car from floating away.
4) Standard equipment is a jack, tire iron and lifejacket.

It looks like a cross between the old 1300 cluster and the later 1500 ones. The main notable differences being that it has a silvery grey gauge surround instead of black, the voltmeter is there and the tach runs forward not backward. Is this the one you have? -Mac.
