Have the head checked and surfaced as well as insuring the valves are good, or need re-grinding, or lapping.

With the block in the car, and as it USUALLY is not an issue, but check the block surface for true-ness. I use a flat file and draw it across the surface to clean it and note whether there are any high or low spots, and hopefully NO cracks... usually not!

(DO YOU SUSPECT JUST A BLOWN GASKET OR WHAT?)

Then I blow out the cylinders (thoroughly around the pistons against the walls at the top of their stroke...) and clean with spirits. I put on head gaskets dry... some use a sealer... note which side goes UP!

Then torque as specified... and you should be OK.

The difference between the height of the crack and surface was less than .0025 in., so I figured them to be insignificant. They were also on the outer edge of the cylinder, so there was a lot of gasket material before reaching the combustion chamber.

What is your best guess as to what caused the cracking? <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I believe you, Dale, said you had a blown gasket between 2 and 3. Nuttin' about water leaks per se.

In that case... I don't think the little surface cracks are an issue and like you said, the gasket will care for them. I would tend to BLOCK sand the head and see if I could minimize the difference though.

Where do they come from... heat mostly. Especially if the water boils off or is none existent in the head... it'll try to expand... then contract at a different
rate than the iron block... The water passage would tend to be a weak point... and thereby crack.

Fast forward a couple months when I finally get the head off, and I find a pool of coolant in the #4 (?far driver side) cylinder. Hence, new gasket and the what not.

The car, incidentally, was running perfectly - i mean the picture of reliability - till I decided it would be a great idea to put on a new ram air intake, header, and huge exhaust. Next time I wont ruin a good thing...

I've seen plenty of X's in the same and worse condition with stock componants...

Anytime one uses dissimilar materials and hopes to seal them together... they are asking for trouble.

What ya have there is not unusual and not that bad of a problem to repair.

Ya gotta remember that these cars are SPORTS cars for those who look at driving and maintaining them as a SPORT or HOBBY, not as a means of daily transportation.

I drove mine to work and back 54 miles each day for 8 years and put over a 100K on it... I have 148K now and have never pulled the head.

So yes, they can be "dependable"... but I bet I NOW spend about 3 hours working (messin' with it) for every hour I drive it... and love it.

Financially speaking... I have never gotten so much for so little money as I have in maintaining my X!

Being that thats the case, I just can't see getting a bucket full of money's worth of head/port work as very realistic. I figure that I won't be able to get what I paid for her in the first place, so I'll have to defer to someone else's deeper pockets. As much as I want to keep them both (X and Spider), several factors prevent this from happening:

1. Wife
2. Taking motorcycle classes in July, and I'd like to buy a bike before I forget everything I learn
3. Wife

My wife of 35 years HATES cars... as evidenced by the new one I buy her every few years. She treats them as trash cans on wheels. Her father (until she was 13)useta wrench and race jalopies at Gardena and she spent all day Saturday in a sweater and a thin dress that she wore all week to school... until midnight.

Then she falls for me who was racing a 56 Chevy around the 'hood and building a T-Bucket Roadster at home.

I could go on... but you get the idea. I now tell her that the FIAT and I are going to the beach today... would she like to join us?

But I degress a bit... I was offered a second X, running, for FREE and I turned it down... cause I didn't wanna have another THING that I would need to put that much attention into!

So I understand where yer coming from... so here are a few other ideas.

1. Don't bother with the 'cycles... they are another lifestyle. Unless yur wife is into that kinda thing... otherwise you'll end up in the same situation.

2. If your wife enjoys the X, build it for her as a SECONDARY SPORTS car! Paint and Interior, along with Reliability are the most important factors to her... in all probability. Be sure to provide her with a custom MATCHING sports jacket, cap and scarf!

You're the second person I know who has a Spider and an X who is facing the same dilemma... and has tentatively elected to dump the X.

I've driven both and it would be a difficult decision... but I like the IDEA of the X over the 124.

Inspect cylinder walls for signs of wear or damage. Feel if wall has a lip near top of block. High lip indicates worn cylinder. Clean/Lube cylinder walls with WD-40 prior to assembly. Make sure not to flood cylinders with fluids.

Scrape all old gasket off block with razorblade. DO NOT GOUGE SURFACE! Buff block surface with green "scotchbrite" pads, don't use pads on Aluninum(head). Surface must be clean enough to do brain surgery on or plan doing whole job over again. Check for surface flatness. Immediately before placing head gasket on your perfectly smooth, flat block, clean block surface with brake cleaner or mineral spirits. I cannot stress enough the importance of cleanliness when doing work such as this.

*For high stress gasket appplications such as this, I alyways use Permatex Polymer HPF gasket cement. If you are not experienced using gasket sealants, do not use on head gasket! You more than likely will cause gasket to leak.*
