Wayne Wright did something similar to this (but with rectangulars) on the green X that now is owned by Mark Plaia, theres a topic about it somewhere around here (cant remember whether its in the DF or WF but seems like I saw it being discussed around here somewhere not too long ago...)

Yes, but the appeal here is to have more modern lighting, ellipsoid projector or HID, for instance, in the same space. There are aftermarket lights that could be made to fit, but again they cost real money.
Rectangular reflectors are the most inefficient out there. Round reflectors for nearly any type of light are far more efficient.
