The rubber in the dogbone was cracked, and the lower mount looked like it had been soaked in oil enough to be sagging a bit.

I replaced the lower mount first and that's were my trouble began. The new lower mount seems to be somehow wrong. With the new mount in place I have less than 1/8" clearance between the passenger side CV joint and the cross member. The CV is now rubbing on the cross member when the engine is under any amount of load.

I replaced the dogbone to help reduce the movement back and forth and still the same problem. I have since replaced the side mount which was sagging a bit but not enough to cause my troubles, and still the CV is rubbing.

I have played around with the alignment of the cross member to see if that will help, and nothing seems to improve the clearance.

I checked the old mount against the new one and really didn't notice any difference. I've checked three times now to make sure the mount is seated fully against the cross member.

What am I missing?

Try this:
Remove the dogbone, push the engine closer to the front and tighten the two bolts that hold the mount to the crossmember. Sometimes you may think it's tightened all the way, but it's not. I hope this helps.

If all is tight like James' suggested... try LOOSENING ALL THE mounts... and re-position the engine with some 2x4's, and re-tighten.

The new dog bone is actually about 1" or so longer than the first one I ordered, but after a week or so of driving, ithe CV has started to rub on the crossmember again. I am beginning to think it may be a faulty lower mount...? I will try what you guys have said, however. Anyone ever had a faulty lower mount before?

I tried working on the upper mount, but there is absolutely no adjustment possible at this point. I don't know about your cars, but the holes for my mounting brackets aren't slotted. I loosened the bolts and tried to move the engine, but there just isn't any movement there.

My guess at this point is it has to be the lower mount somehow not seating fully in the cross member. I'm going to drop the whole thing out tonight and take a look at the new mount again compared to the old one.

I'll post what I find out.

In my case the new mount must be for a 1300. I ordered a 1500 mount, but that seems to be what the problem was. I replaced the new mount with the old one and the problem went away.

In looking at the two mounts there isn't anything that immediately seems different, but when I checked closely the position of the metal portion of the mount where it sits in the rubber bushing I found that my old mount was about 5mm closer to the top of the mount than the new one. When it's all bolted up the old mount gives me about 5mm more clearance between the CV and the cross member.

I feel like a total idiot, but I felt sure the new mount was correct. I guess it pays to really check the parts when they come to make sure they are the right ones for your car.

Anyone need a new 1300 tranny mount? I'll sell it real cheap.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
