EFI circuit is not back yet ), I got to thinking about ways to modify the stock system. How about using a microcontroller to digitize the signal from the air flap remapping it and sending it to the ECU. This would allow one to 'trick' the ECU into thinking it was getting more (or less) air than it really is, thus richening, (or leaning) the mixture. Some people retension the spring, but that just adds a linear offset the signal with no chance to correct non-linearly. Hmmm, just a thought.

If you had an inline valve that you could control the amount of vacuum the regulator saw...what would this do? I think if you lessened the vacuum the regulator would pass less fuel back to the tank and therefore the mixture would richen, but this wouldn't necessarily be good, would it. Unless you use an electronically controlled valve you can't program the system in a non-linear fashion, then you may as well just use an adjustable fuel regulator. Another issue is transient response. It takes a relatively long time for the pressure in the fuel lines to stabilize after a pressure change. Altering the sensor input would provide a much faster response time. Any comments?

I still miss the electric overdrive switch and the turn signals above the horn button. I guess that I don't miss driving along and having a dog barking at me at face level as he is chasing the car. Opened the hood one day to check the oil, a gust of wind blew the hood right off the car, hinges are made of Pot metal and it ripped it in half. If the latter, what kind of a 'microcontroller' would you be referring to? Are you simply looking for something to take the air flap's analogous output as an input, digitize it to your parameters, and put it out to the ECU? or are you talking about something that you would insert after all that, to directly control the injectors?

I am just speculating on low cost mods for those running the stock EFI system as I have already designed a complete ECU based on the Motorola 68376 microcontroller, I am currently waiting on my circuit boards. It features sequential injection and plug per cylinder ignition with 3-d spark and fuel mapping. In addition it allows cylinder by cylinder fuel and spark correction. My idea for the above mod was to use a small home built circuit based on a micro , like a PIC or perhaps an 87c751 between the air flap and the ECU to provide a very low cost programmability to the stock system.
What do you think?

I understand what you are getting at here. I'm certainly interested for my car (Australian spec - equivalent to US spec) L-Jet. I wonder which issues this will solve, though. As I understand it the computer's inability to handle fluctuating manifold pressure is the big limitation of L-Jet with hot cams etc and not so much HOW MUCH fuel is delivered when the engine flows more air. Am I wrong? In any case, this would certainly be a "nice bit of kit" (as the English would say). I think I'd like the flexibility to have this on my car, anyway. Anyone else interested? I have a PIC ignition controller kit that I'm going to build up to replace the stock Bosch ignition. If anyone is interested they can be found at www.jaycar.com.au

Another option is to just disconnect the sensor and force the ECU to go open loop. You won't pass any emissions tests though.

The '376 is a very nice chip. It has a TPU (time processing unit), a CAN controller, a 10 bit ADC, an SPI interface, an RS-232 interface, etc. I am programming it in C++ using the Tasking C++ compiler. My board has 1 meg of Flash and 1 meg of SRAM. It's kind of a pain in the ass because I store my code and calibration data in the same flash. This means I have to copy my program from the flash to the SRAM and execute it from there. This is because you can't execute code from a flash and write to it at the same time. My ECU supports up to 8 injectors and 4 ignition coils. It uses a MAP sensor rather than the air flow meter so I can remove that intake restriction. If you want more information, let me know.

EFI circuit is not back yet ), I got to thinking about ways to modify the stock system. How about using a microcontroller to digitize the signal from the air flap remapping it and sending it to the ECU. This would allow one to 'trick' the ECU into thinking it was getting more (or less) air than it really is, thus richening, (or leaning) the mixture. Some people retension the spring, but that just adds a linear offset the signal with no chance to correct non-linearly. Hmmm, just a thought.

Opened the hood one day to check the oil, a gust of wind blew the hood right off the car, hinges are made of Pot metal and it ripped it in half. If the latter, what kind of a 'microcontroller' would you be referring to? Are you simply looking for something to take the air flap's analogous output as an input, digitize it to your parameters, and put it out to the ECU? or are you talking about something that you would insert after all that, to directly control the injectors?

I am just speculating on low cost mods for those running the stock EFI system as I have already designed a complete ECU based on the Motorola 68376 microcontroller, I am currently waiting on my circuit boards. It features sequential injection and plug per cylinder ignition with 3-d spark and fuel mapping. In addition it allows cylinder by cylinder fuel and spark correction. My idea for the above mod was to use a small home built circuit based on a micro , like a PIC or perhaps an 87c751 between the air flap and the ECU to provide a very low cost programmability to the stock system.
What do you think?

I understand what you are getting at here. I'm certainly interested for my car (Australian spec - equivalent to US spec) L-Jet. I wonder which issues this will solve, though. As I understand it the computer's inability to handle fluctuating manifold pressure is the big limitation of L-Jet with hot cams etc and not so much HOW MUCH fuel is delivered when the engine flows more air. Am I wrong? In any case, this would certainly be a "nice bit of kit" (as the English would say). I think I'd like the flexibility to have this on my car, anyway. Anyone else interested? I have a PIC ignition controller kit that I'm going to build up to replace the stock Bosch ignition. If anyone is interested they can be found at www.jaycar.com.au

The '376 is a very nice chip. It has a TPU (time processing unit), a CAN controller, a 10 bit ADC, an SPI interface, an RS-232 interface, etc. I am programming it in C++ using the Tasking C++ compiler. My board has 1 meg of Flash and 1 meg of SRAM. It's kind of a pain in the ass because I store my code and calibration data in the same flash. This means I have to copy my program from the flash to the SRAM and execute it from there. This is because you can't execute code from a flash and write to it at the same time. My ECU supports up to 8 injectors and 4 ignition coils. It uses a MAP sensor rather than the air flow meter so I can remove that intake restriction. If you want more information, let me know.
