Found this very helpful video on how to do what is probably one of the most misunderstood parts of an engine. Cam timing.

Even though this is for a double overhead cam engine, the theory is the same.

 
Great video.

Finding TDC is a bit more difficult in our cars, as we cannot set a dial gauge to measure straight onto the piston. Using a piston stop makes this possible.

Here is one example on how to do this:
