I just wanted to tell the world that I just bought my first X1/9 about 15 minutes ago! Now I own two cars that I've lusted after since childhood (the other being my Spitfire). It's going to be fun posting here w/some real hands on experience finally. Chatting for 3 months w/no X in the garage just don't cut it (not that I have a garage).
The car is a charcoal grey metallic '82 (build date 10-81) w/85000 miles and is VERY original with 1 gram of rust (TX car). Never had paint or interior work, nor does it need it. I got it from the son of the person who bought it in '85, and it's obvious the car has not been driven very much. Never been wrecked, everything works except the starter (any suggestions on the best one?) so I will be push starting it for the next few days. It does have a/c, but the relay has been removed for 5 years (no chance of it working). Is anyone selling a set of those 4 spoke alloys or possibly Panasports? It's got steel wheels (not the ones like Mac's car, otherwise I'd keep them). I paid $1600 for her, will pick it up Monday and think this will be the neatest car I have ever owned. Looking forward to alot of fun times!

Cheers,
Danny

Does the starter do "nothing" or does it click? If nothing, make sure the red wire at the starter solenoid is attached and gets power when the key is in the "crank" position. If the car sat for a very long time, the starter could possibly be "stuck".. when you remove it, test it off the car before getting a new one. Good luck, and welcome aboard!

I agree with the statement that you should not be popping the clutch (!!!) unless you absolutely have no choice. It is very easy to damage the transmission this way, and believe me, you do NOT want to do that!
sad.gif

If you just can't hold back, at least try to pop it in 3rd or 4th gear, NEVER use 1st or 2nd for this, and NEVER EVER pop it in reverse!!!!!

Else, you will likely have an expensive mistake to fix, and that is the last thing you want on a car that sounds soooo good!

As for the A/C, I am afraid I can't help, as none of my Xs have it, I am uninformed
sad.gif

But about the starter, you really have no excuse for push-starting it, A: because of the risk of damage being so great, and B: the starter is only in with 3 bolts (and the wires attached of course). I know that the engine bay looks mighty cramped when you're not used to working in there, but really the starter is not too hard to get at.

Steve A is correct, it could be stuck, or a loose connection. It may also be the wiring harness at the ignition switch (?) but that would come later, if messing with the starter did not resolve the issue.

My advice: check the starter wiring first. If nothing is out of place, then get a mallet and whack the starter a good couple few times in place. If that doesn't work, then it's time to remove it. As Steve recommends, have it tested before buying a different one. If it finally comes down to a bum starter, there are lots of good parts sources out there, many of which are listed on the SeattleX1/9 website's link page.

Welcome!!

My starter was getting 10.3 volts (normal?) when the key is cranked. I looked at the wires and all looked fine until I took the starter off. Then I noticed a thick black ground wire dangling. I suppose this goes to the other thick poll on the solenoid (I don't have a shop manual)? Anyway, when I took the starter up to Autozone, it would project the gear but it wouldn't spin no matter how we tested it. I ordered a new one (1 Ben Frank) but kept my core in case they are not the same. Should get it Friday.

By the way, I thought of a slick way (IMHO) to check if you have current @the starter w/out getting under the car. Get one of those retractable pen-type magnets and put plastic wiring loom over it. Simply sick the magnet onto the positive pole (on top), hook it to a voltmeter which is placed between the hood and rear window and crank away.

Another question: When I drove the car home, the temp would stay at 190 for about 15 minutes of highway driving, then go up to about 3/4 hot. It was REALLY hot outside (108), but when I got home the coolant overflow was half full. When I got under the car to pull the starter, I realized the two big coolant hoses were empty! Is there a trick to filling X's w/coolant?

Thanks for any help,
Danny <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

well, sorta.
passenger side of the car, under the nose, (in the front trunk way far forward)is a hole. this accesses a 6mm hex head screw that is screwed into the top of the radiator. this is a air bleed screw.

the way the x is designed it takes a long time and lots of high rpm and so on to get the air out of the radiator. this is much quicker :)

park the car so the right side is even with or slightly higher than the left (i put 2 wheels on the sidewalk) then get out the hose, pull the cap off the expansion tank, and start the car.
fill your expansion tank to the top, and while it's warming up go crack the bleed screw open.

you'll get a small spray (or a big one :) when the air is out of it. (just like bleedin brakes, open it enough to let the air out) make sure the thermostat opens up to get all the air out.

tighten it down finger tight, then go check your coolant tank. if the car was empty you might have to do this a few times. when your getting no air out of the radiator, and your coolant tank has a couple inches or more in it, tighten the radiator bleed screw down, fill the coolant tank to the top, and call it good.

(i fill it to the top the first time because your going to "aquire" another quart or so of air volume in it after you drive it a while...)

have fun :)
