[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Apparently so - from the FAQ at the X1/9 Owners Club:

"The name itself was intended by Fiat to be evocative, being the project name (all of the Fiats, and Lancias after the 128, have had an Xn/n project number - the 128 was the X1/1) rather than the release name which would, allegedly, have been the 128 sport"

I'm not sure if this was really a well thought out name though - I read somewhere else that the name stuck because a senior Fiat exec (upon seeing the design) asked Bertone what it was called and they said "X1/9" - and no one ever bothered to come up with another name. Sounds typical of 70's Italian decision making!

I believe the Scorpion was the X1/20?? Does that sound familiar to anyone? <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Bertone was tasked by Fiat to come up with a moderately priced two-seat sports car for the folks who couldn't afford the exotics, and the project was titled X1. The X1/9 which was finalized in the early 70's was the ninth prototype designed by Bertone. It met the requirements of Fiat, which included utilizing as much 'off-the-shelf' Fiat components as possible, ability to 'mass produce', and keeping the cost in the range of the original target audience. When I bought my first X1/9 in March 1975 (it was a '74), I paid ~$4,200 off the lot with mags, bra, 'X1/9' side stripe and a shop manual. In comparison, at about the same time, my to-be wife (who I didn't know at the time) bought a '75 Honda CVCC Civic for ~$4,600.

I rember reading the info. about the X1/9 development in Road & Track in '73, when they had a lime-green X1/9 on the cover and a big write-up inside. Also, if I remember correctly, the original X1/9 dash/instrument cluster won some big design award in '74 (which one I don't remember).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Hmmm... this doesn't add up right. If the Fiat 128 was the X1/1 (a Bertone car?), how could there be 9 consecutive prototypes of the X by Bertone & it not be called the X1/10? (1 + 9 = 10, not 9). ;^)

The "9" designation was the final Fiat code #/name for the "Fiat 128 Spider" (aka project "X1/9").
