2) Begins to warm up and starts idleing erratically
3) Warms up completely and dies in a puff of smoke
What could it be???

Sounds like the carb's jets need removing and/or the float chamber is blocked. The symptoms of ok running whilst on choke then, as the choke closes, first missing then dying is a classic fuel starvation scenario. The old stager is probably due a full carb overhaul kit by now. Over here they cost around $50 but the cost of gas makes it worthwhile, as does the renewed snap of the throttle response when the work's been done. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If you have a leak of aiir getting into the engine , the more fuel you give it, it will compensate more. But as the choke opens it needs more fuel to compensate for the extra air entering, and starts to run poorly. Then when the choke fully opens, it doesn't have enogh fuel to match the excessive air caused by a vacuum leak. Or maybe it is just the carb! good luck <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Its been my experience that it is generally easier and more beneficial to pull the carb and check it out on a bench... rather than messing with it in the vehicle.
Doing that also uncovers bad vacuum lines and the like as mentioned previously.
As you pull the horn, pay particular attention to the float drop, the LEVEL of gas in the bowl, and look for any sediment. (ALso remove and shake the float... ensuring there is no gas in it or its "gas-logged" with fuel. I should FLOAT easily!)
Also any crud attached to the ends of metering rods or otherwise clogged jets.
If it hasn't been done in awhile, now would be a good time to give it an acid bath, blow it all out, replace the gaskets and fuel filter, and reassemble.
As one of the others wrote... you'll be amazed at how many other problems seem to go away!

She worked just fine for about 3 days and then this started happening. I had to stop every 10 min. on the way home to pull the jets (the last time I actually drove for any great distance).
After a carb rebuild and with a new filter, how is crud still getting to my jets? Any idea where this crud could be coming from?
I really appreciate all your guess work. I hope that I don't need to rebuild the carb again. I'll let you know how the vacuum situation checks out as soon as I get some test time in. Thank you again.

Once I had the same problem, I kept getting the jets clogged over and over in no time.
The solution was to remove the fuel tank, to be able to clean it properly. It was a pain but the problem went away.
In my tank I got gum (varnish) inside so when you looked from the top it seemed fine but it wasn't!
I hope you don't have to get that far, it is not really hard but involves some work.

Anyway, is it very difficult to pull the gas tank? Do I need any special tools? I'm not above doing the work but I am on a very limited budget for tools at the moment.

Actually it's quite easy to remove the tank (assuming that is not bent at the bottom).
And to clean it you need a long heavy chain, and that's about it!
First remove the hoses from the top of the tank, then jack up your car as HIGH as you can, then remove the four 13mm nuts on the straps that hold the tank to the body.
Then you lower the tank (You will have to tilt it towards the back), once is out from the car, remove the small 8mm nuts and remove the sender unit out from the tank.
Once you have the tank without the sending unit, drop the heavy chain inside with someone's help shake the tank (a lot), the chain will rub the inner walls of the tank, cleaning it!
If you don't have a heavy chain, you can use stones (golf size), shake it a lot (Not stirred, please...) and then rinse it carefully afterwards.
A long time ago (when I was clogging the jets) it was because I decided to use a good carburetor cleaner (too good, since dissolved the varnish on the tank walls!!), thereafter the gunk made it up to the jets (not good).
You don’t want to know why I practiced removing gas tanks last summer, (another of the famous wrong moves!) But that’s another story.

Before ya do what Gilles suggests... remove the fuel hoses BETWEEN the filter and the carb, check and/or replace.
The filter should trap anything coming from the tank... but if its not the hoses or does prove to be before the filter... best WHOLESALE it all and do it right, as Gilles suggests!
That would also involve insuring the pump is free and clear and also the SOLID lines between the tank and fuel pump. I had a '66 Bug with varnish in the tank and ended up replacing the tank and installing TWO filters in parallel after RODDING the solid line. Took a few months to finally run free... would have been easier to run another fuel line.

I'm not much on symptoms/diagnosis, but I'll share my story of resurrecting my BlackX from a 15 year hibernation. First off, a freshly rebuilt 32DMTRA was installed. Initial fireup and easy cruising showed no problems. But when I started wringing it out and sloshing the fuel around, the ole plugged main jet syndrome appeared...and re-appeared repeatedly, in spite of the cool glass filter with the nylon element that appeared to be doing it's job, in spite of repeated cleanings of the jet and the floatbowl. So I dropped the tank. Tho' in nearly spotless condition inside, there were alot of rust flakes floating around. The only visible rust was a tiny bit at the lower seam. It was the day before an autocross (actually everyday is the day before an autocross for me in the summer), so I tried to clean it as best I could with some lo-volitity (sp?) solvent and a long stick with a sharp, stiff, narrow scraper on the end, then rinse and repeat. You can get nearly all fluid out of the tank thru the sending unit hole. Slapped it back together, and no more problems for a few months. The problem reappeared at an autocross, as it had before...during alot of fuel sloshing. What I think happened was a few more rust particles were freed from the lower seam, then pulverized into sub-microscopic particles that would pass thru two brass mesh filters and the nylon filter (no traces of particles on the nylon filter this time), then they would re-coagulate at the main jet into the pasty goo I found. During both episodes, various other running problems would
appear and disappear. I added a quality paper fuel filter and disassembled the carb for cleaning. Found nothing visible in the carb, but the problem has not re-appeared. Future SOP for me in resurrecting a derelict Fiat is going to include sealing inside of

This essentially doubles your chances of not clogging a filter.
You could add on for three or four or whatever... but I think the BEST would be a dual filter leading to one final filter. (Kinda like a "Y" configuration...)The first pair would filter major crap and if one clogs, the next one will pass fuel... then the output of these two goes to the INPUT of the third and final filter... for anything else that gets by.
This could be rigged up TEMPORARILY with the cheapest filters available and then replaced with one good one when the problem "goes away".

Sounds like the carb's jets need removing and/or the float chamber is blocked. The symptoms of ok running whilst on choke then, as the choke closes, first missing then dying is a classic fuel starvation scenario. The old stager is probably due a full carb overhaul kit by now. Over here they cost around $50 but the cost of gas makes it worthwhile, as does the renewed snap of the throttle response when the work's been done. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If you have a leak of aiir getting into the engine , the more fuel you give it, it will compensate more. But as the choke opens it needs more fuel to compensate for the extra air entering, and starts to run poorly. Then when the choke fully opens, it doesn't have enogh fuel to match the excessive air caused by a vacuum leak. Or maybe it is just the carb! good luck <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Its been my experience that it is generally easier and more beneficial to pull the carb and check it out on a bench... rather than messing with it in the vehicle.
Doing that also uncovers bad vacuum lines and the like as mentioned previously.
As you pull the horn, pay particular attention to the float drop, the LEVEL of gas in the bowl, and look for any sediment. (ALso remove and shake the float... ensuring there is no gas in it or its "gas-logged" with fuel. I should FLOAT easily!)
Also any crud attached to the ends of metering rods or otherwise clogged jets.
If it hasn't been done in awhile, now would be a good time to give it an acid bath, blow it all out, replace the gaskets and fuel filter, and reassemble.
As one of the others wrote... you'll be amazed at how many other problems seem to go away!

She worked just fine for about 3 days and then this started happening. I had to stop every 10 min. on the way home to pull the jets (the last time I actually drove for any great distance).
After a carb rebuild and with a new filter, how is crud still getting to my jets? Any idea where this crud could be coming from?
I really appreciate all your guess work. I hope that I don't need to rebuild the carb again. I'll let you know how the vacuum situation checks out as soon as I get some test time in. Thank you again.

Once I had the same problem, I kept getting the jets clogged over and over in no time.
The solution was to remove the fuel tank, to be able to clean it properly. It was a pain but the problem went away.
In my tank I got gum (varnish) inside so when you looked from the top it seemed fine but it wasn't!
I hope you don't have to get that far, it is not really hard but involves some work.

Actually it's quite easy to remove the tank (assuming that is not bent at the bottom).
And to clean it you need a long heavy chain, and that's about it!
First remove the hoses from the top of the tank, then jack up your car as HIGH as you can, then remove the four 13mm nuts on the straps that hold the tank to the body.
Then you lower the tank (You will have to tilt it towards the back), once is out from the car, remove the small 8mm nuts and remove the sender unit out from the tank.
Once you have the tank without the sending unit, drop the heavy chain inside with someone's help shake the tank (a lot), the chain will rub the inner walls of the tank, cleaning it!
If you don't have a heavy chain, you can use stones (golf size), shake it a lot (Not stirred, please...) and then rinse it carefully afterwards.
A long time ago (when I was clogging the jets) it was because I decided to use a good carburetor cleaner (too good, since dissolved the varnish on the tank walls!!), thereafter the gunk made it up to the jets (not good).
You don’t want to know why I practiced removing gas tanks last summer, (another of the famous wrong moves!) But that’s another story.

Before ya do what Gilles suggests... remove the fuel hoses BETWEEN the filter and the carb, check and/or replace.
The filter should trap anything coming from the tank... but if its not the hoses or does prove to be before the filter... best WHOLESALE it all and do it right, as Gilles suggests!
That would also involve insuring the pump is free and clear and also the SOLID lines between the tank and fuel pump. I had a '66 Bug with varnish in the tank and ended up replacing the tank and installing TWO filters in parallel after RODDING the solid line. Took a few months to finally run free... would have been easier to run another fuel line.

My problem was the idle solenoid. It had become corroded. Pop it out and sand of the conectors. That might help....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I'm not much on symptoms/diagnosis, but I'll share my story of resurrecting my BlackX from a 15 year hibernation. First off, a freshly rebuilt 32DMTRA was installed. Initial fireup and easy cruising showed no problems. But when I started wringing it out and sloshing the fuel around, the ole plugged main jet syndrome appeared...and re-appeared repeatedly, in spite of the cool glass filter with the nylon element that appeared to be doing it's job, in spite of repeated cleanings of the jet and the floatbowl. So I dropped the tank. Tho' in nearly spotless condition inside, there were alot of rust flakes floating around. The only visible rust was a tiny bit at the lower seam. It was the day before an autocross (actually everyday is the day before an autocross for me in the summer), so I tried to clean it as best I could with some lo-volitity (sp?) solvent and a long stick with a sharp, stiff, narrow scraper on the end, then rinse and repeat. You can get nearly all fluid out of the tank thru the sending unit hole. Slapped it back together, and no more problems for a few months. The problem reappeared at an autocross, as it had before...during alot of fuel sloshing. What I think happened was a few more rust particles were freed from the lower seam, then pulverized into sub-microscopic particles that would pass thru two brass mesh filters and the nylon filter (no traces of particles on the nylon filter this time), then they would re-coagulate at the main jet into the pasty goo I found. During both episodes, various other running problems would
appear and disappear. I added a quality paper fuel filter and disassembled the carb for cleaning. Found nothing visible in the carb, but the problem has not re-appeared. Future SOP for me in resurrecting a derelict Fiat is going to include sealing inside of

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->For my '66 Volks I ran two filters in "parallel", meaning I used a "T" to split the fuel line into both of them, then another T on the output back into one line to the carb. This essentially doubles your chances of not clogging a filter.
You could add on for three or four or whatever... but I think the BEST would be a dual filter leading to one final filter. (Kinda like a "Y" configuration...)The first pair would filter major crap and if one clogs, the next one will pass fuel... then the output of these two goes to the INPUT of the third and final filter... for anything else that gets by.
This could be rigged up TEMPORARILY with the cheapest filters available and then replaced with one good one when the problem "goes away".
