You are absolutely correct that we should not limit the circulation of the magazine just to registered members - I believe this for 2 reasons:
1> Only the 40 folks on the Registry would ever get to see it.
2> All the folks in the world won't.
That's it. So I can think of 2 possibilities which would solve this issue...
1> We develop the org to a position where we could accept members anywhere in the world, start charging an annual membership fee, then distribute the magazine free to paid members anywhere in the world.
2> We do not change the way SeaX membership is working, but instead we simply sell magazine subscriptions to anyone in the world, separate & regardless of wether they are a SeaX member or not.
I personally prefer the 1st answer, because I would like someday to see SeaX accepting members via the website, from anywhere on Earth, like the UKX Club does. However, developing the org to the point where we can actually do that effectively will take time, so we might consider the 2nd approach as a temporary measure for distributing the mag until the org grows to such a point. -Mac.

I feel a good drawing point with the SeattleX19 site would be a set of technical articles on all aspects of the X19 which are categorized and available all the time. There is a lot of information on these posts but nothing is organized where you can go back and use it as a reference. Granted my 79' Fiat with the Chev V6 is not your ordinary X19, but I am always looking for technical info on the X. I suspect that there is enough expertise out there that a "how-to" manual could be built if there were be a call for papers.

Doc, about your initial post regarding the UKX Club mag: yes, I have been a member of the UKX club via web for about 1½ years. Even flew to England last summer to attend one of their big annual shows (Brooklands - wow! I gotta post some pics of the 100 X1/9s that showed up)... I receive their newsletter and magazine via snailmail - they distribute these only to paid members of their group.
You see, their mag is quite good I believe - however it is not for everyone every time. Each year their club holds an annual meeting to elect new officers for the coming year. One of the elected posts is for Editor of the magazine. Each year the magazine is different from any previous year simply by virtue of where the current Editor wishes for the mag to go. I have noticed (in general) about X1/9 enthusiasts of the world that although we all love the X, it seems our other tastes do vary widely.
I don't personally have a preference. I am kind of middlin' on the issue because I enjoy reading all of it. I will admit though that in the specific case of us here @ SeaX, our group is more geared toward being a 'preservation society' than a 'club'. If you notice, the word "club" is never mentioned anywhere in the SeaX site as referring to the organization itself - Really it's not a club at all. The goal which SeaX was founded on was to draw our region's owners and enthusiasts together and provide them with some resources to help them learn more about their beloved cars and to help keep the cars in commission.
With that in mind, a "SeaX mag" would have to be geared toward that end, and would be a bit more oriented on tech articles than on other things (although there would have to be a healthy balance of other content as well to satisfy broader interests)...
Doc - and anyone else who might find pleasure in contributing material for a SeaX 'zine - PLEEEASSE DO IT!!!
The only reason it has not already begun is that I am borderline overload already in the amount of volunteer hours I give SeaX. I would love to see a magazine generated from the SeaX organization, but no way can I make it fly myself right now.

Wayne, I agree that an e-warehouse of data and technical items on the X would be more than welcome on this website! Maybe once we get settled in on the new server we can explore that idea. It would be a great resource!

Actually there is a way! On the main forum page, go all the way to the bottom of the page. Waaay down there below where all the current posts are displayed there is a little row of numbers 12345 etc, and a "next" link. These are the controls to access the forum archives...
By clicking on the '1', you go back about 20 posts into the archives from what is currently displayed on the forum. Clicking '2' will take you back into the archives an additional 20 posts, and so on. Clicking 'next' will just take you back in time page by page.
Most all the good info generated in this forum is still in the archives, and you can access any of it, but you are still correct that it is not a very efficient way to search for the specific data you seek... you have to go back through and search for it yourself. But at least it is in there

The technical articles book available through the club regalia is a pretty hefty tome and holds all of the information published in the first 86(?) issues of the magazine. The difficulty I face maintaining the FAQ page at the club website (you did know about it didn't you?) is that I am not allowed to reproduce information held within the technical guide directly. I have to be very select about what information is available online as the rest is a chargeable item. What I can do is let other people write parts of it and include them - so if someone wants to rehash the information from a previous technical article they can do so almost without restriction (verbatim copies would be rather obvious). I'm not encouraging people to simply copy old articles, rather simply to write ANYTHING at all! So far in the nearly 12 months that the FAQ has been available there has been just one (yes one) co-writer and even then it was because I found his superb description of how to convert an X to use the Uno-turbo engine on the web!
I would love to see a single defining technical guide to the ins,outs,dos and donts of the X1/9, but it is a mammoth task and requires cooperation and coordination between all of the X-groups. It also needs people to tell the writers when they get it wrong (I know I have made mistakes on the FAQ and thankfully some of them have been pointed out and corrected!)

Yes, the UK Club's FAQ section on the X1/9 is a MASSIVE undertaking, literally tons of information there and accessible to all via the web. It is impressive just to think of the effort involved in your Club's FAQ pages alone!
By the way, for any of you who have not seen it, the UK X1/9 Club's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) pages are located at the following address:

There is a very large amount of info there which is general and could apply to any X1/9 on the planet, which is good!
The only trouble I have with the UKX FAQ is that it is exactly that: UK X. I realise that great efforts *are* made to make the pages as widely-applicable as is realistic, but there are still huge amounts of data and information about the X1/9 which is "market-specific", especially here in North America.
The North American version of the X1/9 has many unique differences from basically any other market. For this reason, I believe that there is no one outside of North America who could assemble a technical database or library or FAQ on *our* X1/9s with nearly the amount of market-specific information that could be accomplished by an org based here in North America... like SeaX!
I do believe that we could do this for the NA market X. It would be one helluva job, but it would be so very worthwhile, and would fall well in-line with what SeaX was founded on to begin with: to help our region's owners & enthusiasts to preserve and maintain their X1/9s.
If we were to begin work on such a project, I think that - between the UK Club and SeaX - we could assemble an unparalleled resource of technical and informative data.

Many of the 'technical' questions are answered with "are you a member?" or "we'll answer only if you're a member".
This kind of information suppression bothers me. In this age of electronic information overload, too many "websites" don't provide enough real 'information' (usually just company phone #, etc.). One of the things I really like about SeaX is the free information and support ANYONE can get if they ask!
If you come up with a 'magazine', I would hope that any information *could* be available to a newcomer or novice (if they weren't a member) if a specific question was asked.
How about the magazine being 'electronic' and emailed to the supporting members? This would GREATLY help in developing online technical pages.
I know that opens up the possibilities of forwarding, but a Xerox will copy a printed article just as well.
Maybe a little 'spreading around' of any technical articles would be a good thing for SeaX. Could be a good way of 'advertising' if the author(s)/organization is included in any 'copies'.
What do you guys/gals think of this idea? Flame me if you want, I would like to know what the opinions are on this subject!

Seriously, about your idea, I don't think it would be bad to distribute an electronic version of the mag, but that will automatically exclude anyone who wanted an actual physical magazine.
I'm not down on the idea, just saying that it would not eliminate the need for a paper mag.

The adobe PDF system is more than adequate for generating online brochures, catalogues and magazines. The best bit is that it translates very well onto the printed page and it is VERY easy to generate the documents (no different from generating a fax on a pc)
I think you are right to have second thoughts on the idea of simply emailing the magazine, but it does reduce the costs by a very significant level. The ability to produce a magazine in both formats has great potential but also presents another problem. An electronic magazine can simply be copied (at no cost) to anyone who wants it - with this in mind it becomes more or less impossible to control distribution and effectively you have to give it away for free! A printed magazine can still be copied (at greater effort and cost) but is less likely to be so freely given away. Of course if the electronic magazine didn't cost you anything in the first place - what have you got to lose.......
With regard to the FAQ - as I said before it is all one man's work (almost) and I'm the man! As I have no experience at all (hands-on) with Federal Spec X1/9s I cannot put the information into the FAQ. I would love to see the list cover a wider model base, but there is simply no way I can do this myself - I need help on this! At the moment I have donated the work to the UK XOC but it is still intellectually my own property, as such I can distribute it to whomsoever I wish (with the UK XOC graphics and logos removed!) I would suggest that if you want to keep the information at the 'USX' site then it would be a good idea to keep one central working copy and then redistribute from there (in whatever presentation format).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

When I mentioned the electronic format, my intent wasn't to exclude a paper form but to ease in the 'upstart' costs associated with a paper mailing. Since this is an electronic orgainzation (except 1 member) I would assume that everone has a printer available to them.
I would guess that a paper distribution could be made as well, with limited printing.
As for the member #, do the member profiles include these in them? If not, can they be? I must admit that I haven't looked at them for a while (shame on me....) since you had such a good writeup on me!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

That being said, there is no reason why it can't be printed, then added to an electronic archive sometime later (ie: after the next issue came out). It would brin g in funds to the org (to support the server, et al) as well as provide a valuable resource for non-members (cultivating new membership is extremely important).
Speaking of membership, I really do think opening it to non PNW folks should be considered... there are a lot of us out here!

Maybe because the information is free. When I go to other car related sites and the first thing they do is ask you to refgister to look, I click away. I'm afraid that some of the forum users are a little tight on this one. At a guess I think this is their way of increasing membership by encouraging people to join to get technical help. As you said, the fact of the matter is that people would rather walk away than pay £20. I can't criticise them for trying although I do wonder if people might be more encouraged to pay up if they got good help and thought they could get more by paying!
I was technical advisor to the club for some time, and strictly speaking only club members could use my skills and knowledge, but when it comes down to it absolutely anyone could have phoned up (once they had my number) and I had no way at all of checking if they were a member or not so I simply answer the questions anyway. The same applies to most of the other technical advisors too and for the forum.
The UK forum IS free, anyone can use it and if you ask you usually get an answer if someone knows the answer. (Personally I'm not allowed to answer everything on the site that I can, or at least to wait a while because I've upset a few people by my prompt and frequent responses to help others. It seems they want the opportunity to be the first to respond and make a difference!) So none of this negative on the UK forum, it was a great step forward for the X community and not just in the UK! However it will only ever be as good as the people using it and responding to items posted to it!

1) I currently don't own an X1/9, so my *actual* benefits from paying to join an organization may not pay off. I am more interested in some aspects (mostly suspension related) that can be utilized in a Scorpion/MonteCarlo.
2) Not being able to see what the organization offers (don't know anyone personally in the UK), I can't determine if the value of joining exists. This is the 'catch 22' you described. A little more 'help' sells a lot....
I can't imagine that ANYONE would complain about getting questions answered too quickly! Or too many people answering the same question! You shouldn't get that response here!
What I *really* would like to join is a Scorpion owners group, similar to the UK X1/9. Even if there was such a thing, that wouldn't mean that I'd quit this site!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

One of the big benefits is discounts on parts and services, including insurance. Ultimately though everyone joins for different reasons. I reckon there are only 10-15% of the membership actually active - most I imagine simply use the parts and services aspect to keep their car running - plus the benefits of having a large number of X-heads on tap for obtaining help with car problems.
Despite the fact that membership is open to all (internationally) there isn't all that much to offer a foreign subscriber. The parts are still there, but the services are next to useless and everyone in the membership is likely to be VERY distant.
I seem to have intimidated a fair number of people and I suspect that an some people are only posting for an ego-trip to prove they are SOMEBODY. I don't understand it all - I just want to help out and I hope that people would do the same for me. There is talk of making the UK forum at least partially members only, but this is going to be quite hotly debated as I think it is actually moe useful for the club in it's present 'free' format.
As for a scorpion owners club, I know of three - one in Spain, one in the UK and one in Switzerland - and there must be more!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You are absolutely correct that we should not limit the circulation of the magazine just to registered members - I believe this for 2 reasons:
1> Only the 40 folks on the Registry would ever get to see it.
2> All the folks in the world won't.
That's it. So I can think of 2 possibilities which would solve this issue...
1> We develop the org to a position where we could accept members anywhere in the world, start charging an annual membership fee, then distribute the magazine free to paid members anywhere in the world.
2> We do not change the way SeaX membership is working, but instead we simply sell magazine subscriptions to anyone in the world, separate & regardless of wether they are a SeaX member or not.
I personally prefer the 1st answer, because I would like someday to see SeaX accepting members via the website, from anywhere on Earth, like the UKX Club does. However, developing the org to the point where we can actually do that effectively will take time, so we might consider the 2nd approach as a temporary measure for distributing the mag until the org grows to such a point. -Mac.

I feel a good drawing point with the SeattleX19 site would be a set of technical articles on all aspects of the X19 which are categorized and available all the time. There is a lot of information on these posts but nothing is organized where you can go back and use it as a reference. Granted my 79' Fiat with the Chev V6 is not your ordinary X19, but I am always looking for technical info on the X. I suspect that there is enough expertise out there that a "how-to" manual could be built if there were be a call for papers.

Doc, about your initial post regarding the UKX Club mag: yes, I have been a member of the UKX club via web for about 1½ years. Even flew to England last summer to attend one of their big annual shows (Brooklands - wow! I gotta post some pics of the 100 X1/9s that showed up)... I receive their newsletter and magazine via snailmail - they distribute these only to paid members of their group.
You see, their mag is quite good I believe - however it is not for everyone every time. Each year their club holds an annual meeting to elect new officers for the coming year. One of the elected posts is for Editor of the magazine. Each year the magazine is different from any previous year simply by virtue of where the current Editor wishes for the mag to go. I have noticed (in general) about X1/9 enthusiasts of the world that although we all love the X, it seems our other tastes do vary widely.
I don't personally have a preference. I am kind of middlin' on the issue because I enjoy reading all of it. I will admit though that in the specific case of us here @ SeaX, our group is more geared toward being a 'preservation society' than a 'club'. If you notice, the word "club" is never mentioned anywhere in the SeaX site as referring to the organization itself - Really it's not a club at all. The goal which SeaX was founded on was to draw our region's owners and enthusiasts together and provide them with some resources to help them learn more about their beloved cars and to help keep the cars in commission.
With that in mind, a "SeaX mag" would have to be geared toward that end, and would be a bit more oriented on tech articles than on other things (although there would have to be a healthy balance of other content as well to satisfy broader interests)...
Doc - and anyone else who might find pleasure in contributing material for a SeaX 'zine - PLEEEASSE DO IT!!!
The only reason it has not already begun is that I am borderline overload already in the amount of volunteer hours I give SeaX. I would love to see a magazine generated from the SeaX organization, but no way can I make it fly myself right now.

Wayne, I agree that an e-warehouse of data and technical items on the X would be more than welcome on this website! Maybe once we get settled in on the new server we can explore that idea. It would be a great resource!

Actually there is a way! On the main forum page, go all the way to the bottom of the page. Waaay down there below where all the current posts are displayed there is a little row of numbers 12345 etc, and a "next" link. These are the controls to access the forum archives...
By clicking on the '1', you go back about 20 posts into the archives from what is currently displayed on the forum. Clicking '2' will take you back into the archives an additional 20 posts, and so on. Clicking 'next' will just take you back in time page by page.
Most all the good info generated in this forum is still in the archives, and you can access any of it, but you are still correct that it is not a very efficient way to search for the specific data you seek... you have to go back through and search for it yourself. But at least it is in there

The technical articles book available through the club regalia is a pretty hefty tome and holds all of the information published in the first 86(?) issues of the magazine. The difficulty I face maintaining the FAQ page at the club website (you did know about it didn't you?) is that I am not allowed to reproduce information held within the technical guide directly. I have to be very select about what information is available online as the rest is a chargeable item. What I can do is let other people write parts of it and include them - so if someone wants to rehash the information from a previous technical article they can do so almost without restriction (verbatim copies would be rather obvious). I'm not encouraging people to simply copy old articles, rather simply to write ANYTHING at all! So far in the nearly 12 months that the FAQ has been available there has been just one (yes one) co-writer and even then it was because I found his superb description of how to convert an X to use the Uno-turbo engine on the web!
I would love to see a single defining technical guide to the ins,outs,dos and donts of the X1/9, but it is a mammoth task and requires cooperation and coordination between all of the X-groups. It also needs people to tell the writers when they get it wrong (I know I have made mistakes on the FAQ and thankfully some of them have been pointed out and corrected!)

Yes, the UK Club's FAQ section on the X1/9 is a MASSIVE undertaking, literally tons of information there and accessible to all via the web. It is impressive just to think of the effort involved in your Club's FAQ pages alone!
By the way, for any of you who have not seen it, the UK X1/9 Club's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) pages are located at the following address:

There is a very large amount of info there which is general and could apply to any X1/9 on the planet, which is good!
The only trouble I have with the UKX FAQ is that it is exactly that: UK X. I realise that great efforts *are* made to make the pages as widely-applicable as is realistic, but there are still huge amounts of data and information about the X1/9 which is "market-specific", especially here in North America.
The North American version of the X1/9 has many unique differences from basically any other market. For this reason, I believe that there is no one outside of North America who could assemble a technical database or library or FAQ on *our* X1/9s with nearly the amount of market-specific information that could be accomplished by an org based here in North America... like SeaX!
I do believe that we could do this for the NA market X. It would be one helluva job, but it would be so very worthwhile, and would fall well in-line with what SeaX was founded on to begin with: to help our region's owners & enthusiasts to preserve and maintain their X1/9s.
If we were to begin work on such a project, I think that - between the UK Club and SeaX - we could assemble an unparalleled resource of technical and informative data.

Many of the 'technical' questions are answered with "are you a member?" or "we'll answer only if you're a member".
This kind of information suppression bothers me. In this age of electronic information overload, too many "websites" don't provide enough real 'information' (usually just company phone #, etc.). One of the things I really like about SeaX is the free information and support ANYONE can get if they ask!
If you come up with a 'magazine', I would hope that any information *could* be available to a newcomer or novice (if they weren't a member) if a specific question was asked.
How about the magazine being 'electronic' and emailed to the supporting members? This would GREATLY help in developing online technical pages.
I know that opens up the possibilities of forwarding, but a Xerox will copy a printed article just as well.
Maybe a little 'spreading around' of any technical articles would be a good thing for SeaX. Could be a good way of 'advertising' if the author(s)/organization is included in any 'copies'.
What do you guys/gals think of this idea? Flame me if you want, I would like to know what the opinions are on this subject!

The adobe PDF system is more than adequate for generating online brochures, catalogues and magazines. The best bit is that it translates very well onto the printed page and it is VERY easy to generate the documents (no different from generating a fax on a pc)
I think you are right to have second thoughts on the idea of simply emailing the magazine, but it does reduce the costs by a very significant level. The ability to produce a magazine in both formats has great potential but also presents another problem. An electronic magazine can simply be copied (at no cost) to anyone who wants it - with this in mind it becomes more or less impossible to control distribution and effectively you have to give it away for free! A printed magazine can still be copied (at greater effort and cost) but is less likely to be so freely given away. Of course if the electronic magazine didn't cost you anything in the first place - what have you got to lose.......
With regard to the FAQ - as I said before it is all one man's work (almost) and I'm the man! As I have no experience at all (hands-on) with Federal Spec X1/9s I cannot put the information into the FAQ. I would love to see the list cover a wider model base, but there is simply no way I can do this myself - I need help on this! At the moment I have donated the work to the UK XOC but it is still intellectually my own property, as such I can distribute it to whomsoever I wish (with the UK XOC graphics and logos removed!) I would suggest that if you want to keep the information at the 'USX' site then it would be a good idea to keep one central working copy and then redistribute from there (in whatever presentation format).<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

When I mentioned the electronic format, my intent wasn't to exclude a paper form but to ease in the 'upstart' costs associated with a paper mailing. Since this is an electronic orgainzation (except 1 member) I would assume that everone has a printer available to them.
I would guess that a paper distribution could be made as well, with limited printing.

That being said, there is no reason why it can't be printed, then added to an electronic archive sometime later (ie: after the next issue came out). It would brin g in funds to the org (to support the server, et al) as well as provide a valuable resource for non-members (cultivating new membership is extremely important).
Speaking of membership, I really do think opening it to non PNW folks should be considered... there are a lot of us out here!

I'm afraid that some of the forum users are a little tight on this one. At a guess I think this is their way of increasing membership by encouraging people to join to get technical help. As you said, the fact of the matter is that people would rather walk away than pay £20. I can't criticise them for trying although I do wonder if people might be more encouraged to pay up if they got good help and thought they could get more by paying!
I was technical advisor to the club for some time, and strictly speaking only club members could use my skills and knowledge, but when it comes down to it absolutely anyone could have phoned up (once they had my number) and I had no way at all of checking if they were a member or not so I simply answer the questions anyway. The same applies to most of the other technical advisors too and for the forum.
The UK forum IS free, anyone can use it and if you ask you usually get an answer if someone knows the answer. (Personally I'm not allowed to answer everything on the site that I can, or at least to wait a while because I've upset a few people by my prompt and frequent responses to help others. It seems they want the opportunity to be the first to respond and make a difference!) So none of this negative on the UK forum, it was a great step forward for the X community and not just in the UK! However it will only ever be as good as the people using it and responding to items posted to it!

1) I currently don't own an X1/9, so my *actual* benefits from paying to join an organization may not pay off. I am more interested in some aspects (mostly suspension related) that can be utilized in a Scorpion/MonteCarlo.
2) Not being able to see what the organization offers (don't know anyone personally in the UK), I can't determine if the value of joining exists. This is the 'catch 22' you described. A little more 'help' sells a lot....

One of the big benefits is discounts on parts and services, including insurance. Ultimately though everyone joins for different reasons. I reckon there are only 10-15% of the membership actually active - most I imagine simply use the parts and services aspect to keep their car running - plus the benefits of having a large number of X-heads on tap for obtaining help with car problems.
Despite the fact that membership is open to all (internationally) there isn't all that much to offer a foreign subscriber. The parts are still there, but the services are next to useless and everyone in the membership is likely to be VERY distant.
I seem to have intimidated a fair number of people and I suspect that an some people are only posting for an ego-trip to prove they are SOMEBODY. I don't understand it all - I just want to help out and I hope that people would do the same for me. There is talk of making the UK forum at least partially members only, but this is going to be quite hotly debated as I think it is actually moe useful for the club in it's present 'free' format.
As for a scorpion owners club, I know of three - one in Spain, one in the UK and one in Switzerland - and there must be more!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
