The car ran for a year without a hitch and then this problem started up all of a sudden. We did have very hot weather here at the time. I am thinking about replacing the ignition with a MSD system, putting the box and coil in the rear trunk. But because I am going to be pulling the engine (for my turbo project)and selling it next month (anyone interested?) I may avoid spending the additional $500. Or was it the '87 that gave us trouble before?
I have never experienced a failure on the carburated ones... but have come close with clogged drains and pockets full of water.
(In about '81 is when the X started failing in LA with the FI models and ignition problems...)
I would suspect that a clear drain would also AID (albeit slightly) in the cooling of the compartment... and definately aid in flood prevention.
I am not that (closely) familiar with the early bonnets but I have removed the inner baffle on both my cars and it has really helped cool the engines down. Air just EXITS straight UP... and although the engine will get wet in rain... the distributor and coil are well tucked outta the way. (I also like to be able to peek at my clean engines without opening the bonnet and I still retain the stock "lines"... best o' both worlds!)

On the older cars, the sides of the engine compartment are not covered by the hood; they have a vented cover that breathes very well.
As for Sat., I'm glad you didn't waste your time. The ad read "must see"... what he sould have said was "must see how bad it is". It wasn't even a '74.

Or was it the '87 that gave us trouble before?
I have never experienced a failure on the carburated ones... but have come close with clogged drains and pockets full of water.
(In about '81 is when the X started failing in LA with the FI models and ignition problems...)
I would suspect that a clear drain would also AID (albeit slightly) in the cooling of the compartment... and definately aid in flood prevention.
I am not that (closely) familiar with the early bonnets but I have removed the inner baffle on both my cars and it has really helped cool the engines down. Air just EXITS straight UP... and although the engine will get wet in rain... the distributor and coil are well tucked outta the way. (I also like to be able to peek at my clean engines without opening the bonnet and I still retain the stock "lines"... best o' both worlds!)
How did Saturday go??? Mine went well, considering...

On the older cars, the sides of the engine compartment are not covered by the hood; they have a vented cover that breathes very well.
As for Sat., I'm glad you didn't waste your time. The ad read "must see"... what he sould have said was "must see how bad it is". It wasn't even a '74.
