Here is a link to the Census abstract from which the numbers are bing pulled for numerous news articles-or at least I think this is the case.

There are interesting details amid the various categories of numbers.
I found the numbers on 'doubling up' interesting in particular.

The long and short of the household income and household wealth story at present is that the median household income is just under $50,000 and median household wealth at just above $90,000.

Also, here is a tabulation of the average 401k account by age groups covering the middle age and above group.

  • 40 to 44, $59,900
  • 45 to 49, $81,100
  • 50 to 54, $105,400
  • 55 to 59, $122,400
  • 60 to 64, $120,600
  • 65 to 69, $122,900
  • 70+, $96,700
The $120,600 for the 60-64 might possibly produce $7000/yr in income if invested in a long term muni bond of just barely investment grade.
At current treasury level that amount would be $4200.
Welcome to retirement America!!!
