I want to thank Mike Mittelstead and Mark Scholz for having me down to Damascus last night & helping me get my recently acquired Koni rears apart and mounted on my X. These guys are amazing and what incredible cars! Mark's 3P is evolving rapidly into a competetive autocrosser and MMs plethora of X1/9s is impressive as ever (naturally!)
I also had new top mounts that I have been sitting on for a while (waiting for them to hatch??) and we installed the Konis on what appeared to be a stock set of rear X springs, with the new top mounts.
Well I have to report, after driving back to Olympia and around many local backroads today, that the Konis are making the car behave noticably different, even as they are - on the softest setting - they are still slightly firmer than the silver KYB GR2s that came off. The car feels even more sure-footed than ever before.
One thing though, and I don't know whether it is because of the new (to this car) rear springs or the new top mounts but SOMETHING is making the car sit way higher in the rear than before. WAY HIGHER. When we were looking at it last night, MM said it would probably settle after driving. Well I did drive and it did settle, trouble is, it's just as tall when it's settled as when it's not
SOOooo, my X1/9 is now sporting these great struts but has the posture of a jacked-up '69 Camaro! That ass end is so high up that I can actually fit my entire hand (!!) sideways between the fender lip and the tire top. Damn it looks like a four wheel drive!
So what do you think is the likelihood of us having a spring cutting tech session at Wayne's place during the gathering on the 7th? We'll need spring compressors, a cutting wheel would be very helpful and I can provide the portable map-gas torch if anyone can rustle up a bench vise
Hey, we could install Mark Plaia's ingenious steering pivots up front while the festivities are in full swing

Also, if it is correct that the Konis you have placed the spring perch higher than stock, cutting a rear spring may make the ride too hard. Cutting a front spring may be too soft, but I do have a set off a 124 which has a wire diameter slightly smaller that the X19s rears. Cuting the 124's may be the way to go. We will do some measuring and decide during the barbque. I will have space in the shop for your car during the tech session.

The car is set up like this: it has old top mounts on front and new on rear, KYB GR2s in front, Konis in rear. The rear has (what appear to be) stock rear X springs and the front has stock rear springs cut down 1.5 coils...
I would like to install Mark Plaia's steering pivots and new front top mounts while we are at this, and maybe even take one more 1/4-coil off the fronts (I cut them before the bumperless conversion and the minute the bumpers came off, the nose went high again). As for the rears, I don't know what the deal will be. I don't know, but judging from the stiffness of the cut fronts (I am liking that BTW) I was thinking we might just cut a coil off the rears for starters, bend down the new end and finish the cut edge, and see what we get.
It's all open to exploration though, so I will just bring the X and the parts. Do I need to bring the map-gas torch (for bending new ends to the cut springs) or do you have something similar Wayne? Probably you do considering all you are doing out there. I can't wait to see all the folks at this gig! I'll be there!! -Mac
