In an article written by Ray Bohacz in Hemmings Rod and Performance Mag, (Nov-Dec 2000) he talks about many facets of increasing HP and limiting detonation via a PROPER cooling system...
What caught my eye was the some of the tips and facts that I thought I might apply to my car... even though its cooling isn't a real issue.
1. Pure water "conducts" (transfers) heat 2 1/2 times greater than a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. I knew water was better, (not THAT much better!) but thought using 100% anti-freeze would save me a whole bunch of other headaches. The author suggests an 80/20 or 70/30 mix for performance engines... especially for folks like us who will clean, flush and maintain our cooling systems yearly with glee!
2. For those of you who wish to go all out, Evans Cooling Systems, Inc. makes an "NPG Coolant" that won't freeze until 70 below and won't boil until it reaches 379 degrees F with ZERO pressure. Runs about 20 bucks a gallon... and no water is used. Although a bit pricey, this option provides for zero corrosion (like 100% antifreeze) with greatly increased cooling properties.
3. For those of you somewhere inbetween... Red Line Water Wetter increases the thermal conductivity of a typical antifreeze mix, increases the boiling point from 212 F at zero to 227 F, and generally reduces operating temps as much as 20 degrees.
Add this to your existing mix (12 oz. bottle) for 10 bucks.
4. Lastly, as I have mentioned before and experienced personally, a quart of Duralube in the crankcase (12 bucks at WalMart) reduced my operating temp by 17 degrees. Also insure the radiator is full (purged) and mounted in its CORRECT position, and that the fan or fans are operating properly. (I added a second fan wired in parallel with the first, with no increase in fusing or wiring, works GREAT in traffic!)
