Looking for a reputable shop in So-California

Hi guys,

I just purchased a 1976 X. The guy I bought it from referred me to this site. I am still figuring out the Fiat thing and would like to have the car given the once over by a specialist.

The car has a few little quirks and I'd like to know whats going on.

I am very happy with the work of Snow's Foreign Car in Orange. I tried one other place and was not to thrilled at the service. They are fast, fair priced, and know the X1/9 inside and out.

Where in S. California are you located? The basic area is equivalent to some countries in square miles.

His "Location" says Irvine, CA

Does that help? I am not from SoCal, so I have no clue myself. :)

Well, there was Cosmo's Sport Cars in Irvine. While he specialized in Ferrari and Lambo, he took care of a few customers who also happened to have X1/9s in their stable. He's semi-retired now. I don't believe he is taking any new customers, but may be wrong. About a hour north of you is Alfa Italia in Burbank. I've used them quite a bit over the years. But that's a good hours drive with no traffic, straight up I5. They're right off the freeway.

allisons automotive in clairmont specializes in fiats, he did ricados x motor a little while ago. thats where i go when i need help. 909 981 3566.

Looking for repair in Ventura county

I'm looking for a repair shop myself, but in the Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks Ventura county area of S. Calif, if anyone knows a place near there. Thanks

Fiat mechanic in Northridge CA

I can confidently recommend Santos Italian Car repair in Northridge as quite capable. They specialize in Alfa Romeo but they were great on my X19.

Went through the documents that came with the car...

Anybody heard of Ital Meccancia in Huntington Beach? I have records for the car at this shop from 1982 all the way to 2003. This shop must know my X inside and out.

I looked them up online and theres no real info for this shop available. Does anybody have experience with Ital Meccanica? The receipts say "Fiat Lancia Alfa Romeo" but the web says all that + Volvo. So I wonder if they are still good with the Italian stuff.

Yep, that yellow one would be mine. On what end are you located? I spend most of my time in Simi, Moorpark and TO. The X is my daily commuter to Santa Paula.

Hi- The few times I've seen you, I've been in my Porsche Boxter which is my main daily driver, but I drive a Silver/black X19 twice a week from Moorpark to Simi on LA Ave. You have a nice X, how many miles?

Miles...

About 286K. Three owners (two technically, long story). Two and a half engines. Four paint jobs. One accident.

my experience with italMeccanica

This shop is located just next block to my office and almost all the time I pass at front to them.

Many years ago I was need to adjust the timing on my X and they told me they don't have the tools to do it?

a couple years ago I went to ask for rebuilt my engine and they make a quote for over $4,000.00 ...
(Maybe I talked with the wrong person, I tought I asked to the owner he was an old Italian guy who speaks perfect Spanish & English.)

Since long time ago i didn't see any FIAT or ALFA surround this shop, just volvo's and right now they restoring an old VW bug?

That's why I prefer to tow my X and go to MARK ALLISONS shop on UPLAND CA

I'm very happy with his job here some images

A lot of miles

Alot of miles - do you work on it yourself or where do you go for service? I've got a radiator leak I want to get fixed at some point. FYI - I usually see you driving by on Tierra Rijada near the 23 at 4:45.
Would like to hear your story some time

4:45? That seems to imply I left work a little early or something (looking over shoulder). The story? The car was bought off of a used car lot in Reseda in 1988. It was a trade in by the original owner. It had this truly repulsive dual tone brown-beige paint job. The car was originally grey from the factory. One oddity worth mentioning: The original owners manual was still with the car. There was a small sticker placed on the cover with a message that read something to the effect of 'this car has been subjected to flooding or water damage.' Does that mean it got swamped coming over on the boat? I never saw any evidence of water damage or flooding.

Anyway, I bought the car for a then girlfriend. Big mistake :rolleyes2:. Her ability to shift gears could best be compared to a tree shredder attempting to digest a steel spike ridden tree. Even as she drove around the corner and out of sight, some extrasensory perception caused me to wince, knowing full well that one or more gears had just gone through the puree cycle. Her parking abilities were even less stellar. Apparently, one day, she decided to accessorize the car with a mail box. That X had a perfect body before the passenger door skin caved in. At least the color matched. Did I mention the car had been painted several months before this? She chose a dark metallic teal, as was popular on those IROC Cameros at the time. This was paint job number three if you're counting.

Later that year, the car sustained two break-ins. In both cases, the radio and speakers were stolen. The speakers, mounted by the roll up window handles, were of course ripped out from the door panels. Was it too hard to actually lock the doors sometime?

Finally, one dark cold winter day, as she was pulling away, I became a witness to transmission self destruction. I remember a huge splash of gearbox oil hitting the pavement, and a little steam rising from a patch on water on the pavement (or was I just getting teary eyed?).

Enough was enough. As far as she was concerned, the car was cursed. I 'bought' it off of her (hey, didn't I buy this thing in the first place?!?). I had the transmission rebuilt by Cosmo's Sports Car in Irvine. She got the boot around New Years 1989 :woot:. I happily drove the car as a daily driver for the next several years. It finally got the yellow paint you see now back in 2006. I'm still working on the interior.
