4:45? That seems to imply I left work a little early or something (looking over shoulder). The story? The car was bought off of a used car lot in Reseda in 1988. It was a trade in by the original owner. It had this truly repulsive dual tone brown-beige paint job. The car was originally grey from the factory. One oddity worth mentioning: The original owners manual was still with the car. There was a small sticker placed on the cover with a message that read something to the effect of 'this car has been subjected to flooding or water damage.' Does that mean it got swamped coming over on the boat? I never saw any evidence of water damage or flooding.
Anyway, I bought the car for a then girlfriend. Big mistake :rolleyes2:. Her ability to shift gears could best be compared to a tree shredder attempting to digest a steel spike ridden tree. Even as she drove around the corner and out of sight, some extrasensory perception caused me to wince, knowing full well that one or more gears had just gone through the puree cycle. Her parking abilities were even less stellar. Apparently, one day, she decided to accessorize the car with a mail box. That X had a perfect body before the passenger door skin caved in. At least the color matched. Did I mention the car had been painted several months before this? She chose a dark metallic teal, as was popular on those IROC Cameros at the time. This was paint job number three if you're counting.
Later that year, the car sustained two break-ins. In both cases, the radio and speakers were stolen. The speakers, mounted by the roll up window handles, were of course ripped out from the door panels. Was it too hard to actually lock the doors sometime?
Finally, one dark cold winter day, as she was pulling away, I became a witness to transmission self destruction. I remember a huge splash of gearbox oil hitting the pavement, and a little steam rising from a patch on water on the pavement (or was I just getting teary eyed?).
Enough was enough. As far as she was concerned, the car was cursed. I 'bought' it off of her (hey, didn't I buy this thing in the first place?!?). I had the transmission rebuilt by Cosmo's Sports Car in Irvine. She got the boot around New Years 1989 :woot:. I happily drove the car as a daily driver for the next several years. It finally got the yellow paint you see now back in 2006. I'm still working on the interior.
