Question - I got all of the nuts (some with studs) off of the intake part of the manifold. I lifted up on the manifold to make sure it would come free when I get ready to finish the job tomorrow, and coolant came pouring out of somewhere...not really sure where, but most of it ran down the block. Just wondering if this is normal< I did not know if the intake manifold is desgined to allow coolant to flow through it or if I have a problem somewhere. You all know I am new to this stuff (I love it) but I am still learning some of the "mechanics" of repairing my own car! thanks !

When you get the exh. manifold off too (without breaking any studs off) and you have trouble getting the old gasket off, buy a can of gasket remover. That stuff kicks butt and makes the job super easy.
Just don't break any studs, but it sounds like you are doing well so far. Soaking and heating is the ticket.

I've had an '81 FI car (as a daily driver) since '95, and I ran into your water-leak awhile ago... The 128's had coolant-heated inlet manifolds, and the two coolant exits are still in the head casting. What I did, was to tap the two holes for 8mm x 1.25 allen set-screws (8mm long). These won't obstruct coolant flow in the head, and as long as you get them flush with, or below the mating surface of the head, you shouldn't have any problems with the gasket sealing. I'll post some stuff, one of these days - I'm doing a loonie head/cam exhaust set-up for my car, but I'm going to keep the car a fuelie, so I'm gonna need some real technical help! After being an Alfa driver for 15 years, I had gotten really bored with front engine/rear-drive chassis dynamics. The only mid-engined cars which I could afford (whatever I got was going to be my daily driver) were an X1/9, Lancia Scorpion, or Porsche 914, so I checked out all three cars, and the X was clearly the best engineered of the bunch. I looked at about a dozen cars before I found a good one, but since then I've learned more about driving than I did in 15 years of Alfas! Question - I got all of the nuts (some with studs) off of the intake part of the manifold. I lifted up on the manifold to make sure it would come free when I get ready to finish the job tomorrow, and coolant came pouring out of somewhere...not really sure where, but most of it ran down the block. Just wondering if this is normal< I did not know if the intake manifold is desgined to allow coolant to flow through it or if I have a problem somewhere. You all know I am new to this stuff (I love it) but I am still learning some of the "mechanics" of repairing my own car! thanks !

When you get the exh. manifold off too (without breaking any studs off) and you have trouble getting the old gasket off, buy a can of gasket remover. That stuff kicks butt and makes the job super easy.
Just don't break any studs, but it sounds like you are doing well so far. Soaking and heating is the ticket.

I've had an '81 FI car (as a daily driver) since '95, and I ran into your water-leak awhile ago... The 128's had coolant-heated inlet manifolds, and the two coolant exits are still in the head casting. What I did, was to tap the two holes for 8mm x 1.25 allen set-screws (8mm long). These won't obstruct coolant flow in the head, and as long as you get them flush with, or below the mating surface of the head, you shouldn't have any problems with the gasket sealing. I'll post some stuff, one of these days - I'm doing a loonie head/cam exhaust set-up for my car, but I'm going to keep the car a fuelie, so I'm gonna need some real technical help! After being an Alfa driver for 15 years, I had gotten really bored with front engine/rear-drive chassis dynamics. The only mid-engined cars which I could afford (whatever I got was going to be my daily driver) were an X1/9, Lancia Scorpion, or Porsche 914, so I checked out all three cars, and the X was clearly the best engineered of the bunch. I looked at about a dozen cars before I found a good one, but since then I've learned more about driving than I did in 15 years of Alfas!
