A quick qeustion regarding model years...
My car is titled as an '86. It has a build date of 7/85. On the little chrome cover over the intake chamber, it says it meets emission requirements for 1986 model cars. It does not have a third brake light above my head. I thought all 1986 model cars had to have that light, so is my car actually an '86 or not?
Any ideas?

It would not take a big stretch of the imagination to see them having a stack of unnumbered '85s (built to '85 spec that is) sitting around the factory or still on the line at the turn of the '86 run, and just clearing them out the door by numbering them as '86s as they left the place. Perhaps these cars came about in such a way? Pure speculation but in light of some of the other bits of production history that we do know, it would not surprise me -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

For instance, my build date is 6/80 indicating a late 1980 model or early 1981 model. Yet the serial number of 1366XX would indicate almost the end of the '81 model year, according to published records. I just did a transaxle R&R and all of the case castings have a little clock face date indicator cast into them. Mine indicate that the transaxle castings were made in July of '81.
My theory FWIW. Bertone batch built the chassis/bodies in large lots, build dated them and stashed them. When they were building for Fiat, they built the finished cars and serialized them as the components came over from Fiat. When they were building for themselves, they finished and serialized the cars as the orders came in.
This is about the only way that I can figure the large discrepancies in the dates/serial #'s/model years.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Most companies do this, so it is not surprising that an X marked as built in the last 6 months of a given year would be marketed as the next year's model...
The real weirdness with X1/9s is where even those guidelines don't apply (ie: an X with a build date of early '82 being trimmed/equipped as an '84, or a build-dated '77 being registered by VIN number as a '76 etc) -Mac.

A quick qeustion regarding model years...
My car is titled as an '86. It has a build date of 7/85. On the little chrome cover over the intake chamber, it says it meets emission requirements for 1986 model cars. It does not have a third brake light above my head. I thought all 1986 model cars had to have that light, so is my car actually an '86 or not?
Any ideas?

It would not take a big stretch of the imagination to see them having a stack of unnumbered '85s (built to '85 spec that is) sitting around the factory or still on the line at the turn of the '86 run, and just clearing them out the door by numbering them as '86s as they left the place. Perhaps these cars came about in such a way? Pure speculation but in light of some of the other bits of production history that we do know, it would not surprise me -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

For instance, my build date is 6/80 indicating a late 1980 model or early 1981 model. Yet the serial number of 1366XX would indicate almost the end of the '81 model year, according to published records. I just did a transaxle R&R and all of the case castings have a little clock face date indicator cast into them. Mine indicate that the transaxle castings were made in July of '81.
My theory FWIW. Bertone batch built the chassis/bodies in large lots, build dated them and stashed them. When they were building for Fiat, they built the finished cars and serialized them as the components came over from Fiat. When they were building for themselves, they finished and serialized the cars as the orders came in.
This is about the only way that I can figure the large discrepancies in the dates/serial #'s/model years.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Most companies do this, so it is not surprising that an X marked as built in the last 6 months of a given year would be marketed as the next year's model...
The real weirdness with X1/9s is where even those guidelines don't apply (ie: an X with a build date of early '82 being trimmed/equipped as an '84, or a build-dated '77 being registered by VIN number as a '76 etc) -Mac.
