Ever since I saw the countach/X body kit here a few months ago, I was kinda thinking how cool that would be...then I got a bright idea...one which I like, but don't know if anyone else has thought of it, or if it would bring lashes from wet noodles...but my dream was a X modified into a Lancia Stratos. It had been a while since I had seen a Stratos, and I have always thought they were cool, and I found one for sale here in the states yesterday.....for $102,000. Since I do not have that kind of cash (no cash at all actually), I was thinking of a body conversion and engine transplant for my X. Think of it, a targa on a Stratos.........about 5 years ago, I had a chance to ride in a replica built on a Fiat (non X) doner, and it had a Alfa V6 in it. The think kicked arse. What do you all think? Has anyone heard of a X/Stratos conversion? Think it would be possible to modify a replica shell for an X? Just thoughts...would be expensive to do I am sure, but not as bad as over 100g's like a real one....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The tooling and mold costs would be exorbinant! Now, if your plan was to go into the business of doing it, it might be profitable, but I'm sure it would cost you a ton of money to just make one.

Of course, you also need to take into account the cost of materials (it never comes out right the first time!)

Anyone have any experience doing anything like this?

The concept was really good, but like many GM projects, they made some poor choices early on, and then when they got them right (87-88), they killed the project. I've seen quite a few Fiero rebodies, particularly Ferrari knock-offs, some quite good, some just awful, but there's a lot of potential there.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Umm, the Fiero is a Mid-engined car, like the X and Toyota MR2. It is based on the same principles, put a FWD drivetrain in the middle of the car driving the rear wheels and build a 2-seat sports car around it.

Of course GM couldn't quite get it right and when they finally did, they gave up on it because it was unprofitable. Sigh... American automakers could kick some butt if they didn't have their heads firmly entrenched in their own.

I think the X is a little on the small side to be an exact replica, but you could certainly get close enough to enjoy the looks of one. Hey, if they can make a Fiero look a GT-40 or a Lebaron look like a Mercedes, you can make an X look like a Stratos.

I thought I remebered seeing a place in the UK that was selling Stratos body parts, including the rally car pieces. I'll see if I can find it again...

The hardest part is the fact that the X doesn't have easily removable body panels like the Fiero or even the MR2. So you would either have to bond the new body to the old and trim a few pieces, which would be rather heavy. You could completely cut-off the fenders, nose, etc. then add some supports for the new body parts and save some weight and lose some possibly rusty body panels which might give an older forlorn X a lease on a new life.

The worst part of the conversion is the additional weight of the engine in the back of the car which would make understeer worse. If you relocate the fuel tank to the front trunk with a fuel cell you could offset some of that weight, but lose some usability of the car. I'd probably not bother with the V-6 conversion, just stick with a lighter weight 4-cylinder, whatever your preference is.

The windsheld angle is completly different, wheel base is sort of close but the width is too narrow. If you take siloete drawings of each in the same scale you will notice how much work it would be to do this. Check out the last issue of Auto Italia

They're plentiful, easy to get parts for, more reliable, quieter, equally (better?) well handling, comfortable, and they rev like hell, too. The other advantage is the final generation (before the spider) could be pushed well over 400 BHP... Means you could put a Ferarri body, and get Ferarri performance.
I saw a pretty nifty Ferarri MR2 Kit from the Fiero Factory (they modify it for the MR2). It's unfortunately in Britain, but there are similar offerings in the U.S. for cheaper(I don't think they look quite as polished tho).

Some of my concerns with this project are as follows..

1. Modifying windshield to take Stratos glass along with relocating any and all equipment (I.e. Wiper, hoses hood, latch)
2. Engine Mounts for a high hp engine...like an Alfa. I do not mind losing the rear trunk, and was thinking about modifying the wide fenders from an X body kit to mold in with a Stratos kit or fabricated rear cover.
3. rear and front tilt mechanism.

I really want to stick with the X platform, and don't really care if it is smaller than the Stratos. I remember seeing a Ferrari kit, and that Lambo kit for an X and the obviously were not the exact size of the actual cars. I am thinking more of getting the response "What the hell?...cool..." when driving down the street. The X, altho not too common, is still recognized all over. Hell we have 70+members here in SeattleX, but the Stratos on the other hand is not as common here. so.. a. Not many people are going to know the difference in size b. It would be cool. When I look at a Stratos, I see lots of design elements shared with the X, but in mine I am wanting people to see the X with a lot of elements shared from the Stratos. I work up the street from a "hot rod" shop, and they do a lot of kit cars, and customs. (Cobra replicas, and chopped tops.) They mainly do American Muscle, but they might be the people to talk to about possibilities and problems that could arise...

Well, until I win the lotto, it is all a pipe dream I guess....unless someone out there wants to trade me a Stratos (real or replica) for my X.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Looking at it, the front section (forward of the windshield) looks quite a bit like the exxie and the rest of the car's general shape isn't too far off either. The rear spoiler is a little bit like the old bayless abarth style spoilers like on Julian's car. The rear fender flairs are like the abarth exxie as well. I've decided to get those rear flairs in the near future, try to find the bayless spoiler (I read a post not too long ago mentioning that bayless is going to try to reinstate these in the spring...) and just bought some four spoke campagnolos which aren't too far off in design from the five spoke campys on the Stratos (light as hell too...). Do I want a full on Stratos project? No. But incorporating styling cues on the Stratos does make for a very aggresive looking exxie without going over the edge. Now if only I can find a way to get the Dino 246 engine to fit...<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The irony is that this car is owned by one of the guys I race against (when I finally get around to it!) and Henessy used to be the championship sponsors! I saw it in the flesh a couple of years ago and it IS a truly stunning car although I would be rather dubious of it's road-going manners.

But, I once parked my X next to a real Stratos here in Western Australia, owned by a guy who imported it from the UK. The Stratos was both shorter and lower than the X. I think the Stratos might have been wider, and not sure about the wheelbase - maybe similar because the front overhang is longer on the X. In terms of overall proportion and shape, it struck me that they are very different cars.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
