I know how to remove the instrument cluster, but what does it take to get into the levers?
At some point I'll probably want to remove the whole dash to dye it black too. (anyone notice that Search isn't returning anything these days?)

Mine is standard and the heater is really hard to close (easy to open though) - hopefully just a cable lube??

His is an A/C car, can't get it to warm up - feels like the sheeth might be loose at one end or the other. Also, his pushbuttons stick and could use some TLC.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I know the later model Dashes differ from my 77 dash, but in my case I removed the instrument cluster, the speaker cover, and the four nuts holding it in place. Then it required a whole lotta pulling. My old dash required me to have the top off, standing on the seats, pulling my arse off until "POP"!. It shot out of the car and landed about 15 feet away..I ended up sitting on the targa bar. I had a replacement dash to put in, so I was not too worried about the dash I was taking out. You may need to remove your steering wheel.
I am currently trying to figure out how I can make my own dash, that would eliminate the center consol and be set in three seprate parts to make it easier to install, and remove.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have taken my dashboard out on my '79 and '85 and here is how it works (as far as I remember).
First take out the instrument cluster by releasing six allen scews, pulling it out and diconnecting two or three wires and the speedometer cable. I think you have to take out the steering wheel. The speedo cable may have to be disconnected from the front trunk.
Take out the glove compartment. it has two bolts in the rear wall or maybe one the bottom and then it just pulls out.
Then there are three bolts ( or maybe four) holding the dashboard, two behind the instrument cluster and one behind the glove compartment. There may be another one behind the heater controls. Then, if I remember the panel is snapped on the sides. I'll check on it later and may add this info.
After releasing the three bolts the dash comes out to the rear of the car, nice and easy.
Of course there is the radio, clock and whatever you have.
I am pritty sure this is about all.
On reinstalling mine I added self adhesive foam pads in all places where the dashboard touches any part of the car to eleminate those nasty squeaks it used to have.
Good luck - Herzel '85 x <!-- google_ad_section_end -->
