Every hopped-up X that I have been in has been really LOUD. Leading me to think that an engine transplant is the way to go. Thanks to everyone for the Hayabusa comments. That avenue now seems less promising. So how does one develop a powerful X engine without driving yourself and other drivers deaf? Must it always be a choice between power and peace?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->A noisy fiat is a public nuisance just like playing Mozart or Miles Davis too loud-it may annoy some, but it's still beautiful.
I'd search for engine swap, power, turbo etc. This is the eternal question. But I love talking about this, so:
It depends how much power you want. If you're satisfied with approximately 110 (this varies a lot concerning how streetable, durable, expensive you want your engine to be of course), it's probably best to just hop up the engine with more aggressive cam, carb, pistons, exhaust etc. You can still get a pretty quiet exhaust that's low flow.
If you want more power, it seems like an engine swap is in order. 2 litre spider engines will fit, and they can be made to put out substantial amounts of power. Also, they've been done by many people, there's even a kit or two available (follow links from site below).
I think that if you're going to the trouble of an engine swap, however, and don't mind putting a japanese engine in, it's the way to go. It'd mean a bit more work (custom mounts, custom exhaust), but the reliability, economy, and quietness factors all appeal to me. Also, there are many performance parts available for the little 4 bangers.
Another interesting idea is Mazda 13b rotary. They're light, small, and powerful. Plus, if you want a lot of power, rotarys are considerably resistant to boost pressure. There's a kit to mount the 13b to a porsche 914 transmission and VW type 1 transmission available from Kennedy engineering (prices run 400-700 for kits it seems, but a couple hundred more in parts will be needed).
Ulix has a great page of pictures of engine swaps http://www.mirafiori.com/~ulix/X19/EngineSwaps.html with a few links on it.
Also, just typing fiat x1/9 engine swap into the search engine on google.com will bring up many results.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Thanks, Mike, for the tips. I'm looking at everything. After driving Perry's newly acquired 87, I am definitely unsatisfied. Responses to the Hayabusa question have led me to believe that I should try improving the original 1300/1500. Just want to avoid the NOISE!! Loud X's don't sound nearly as bad as a loud Spider, but I still want a quiet, powerful car. If going to the trouble of a DOHC conversion, why not just do the Chrysler turbo? When all is said and done, you'll have same weight, more power, stronger gearbox, and the SOHC Chrysler should fit better. Or, maybe just follow Perry's advice and TURBO, TURBO, TURBO the stock unit.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have had some talks in length with Dwight Varnes in PA who was a fiat parts guy. He told me of a turbo conversion that once was offered for the X. Also their shop turboed an X which is still very much alive thank you, for all you nay sayers, and doing very well. They took a turbo off of a late 80's subaru and an intercooler off of an early 80's saab and plumbed it in without opening up the engine. No water injection and the rest was left stock. The resultant power was very impressive according to Dwight and ate up mr2's and the like with ease. They had to stay at 10 lbs of boost because the clutch would spin with any more power added. At this level the car more than amply pushed you into the seat as you ran through the gears. Also noise and emissions are greatly reduced and mileage is improved. So the question is do yah want to go fast, well do yah (and not wake up 10 square blocks of your neighbourhood doing it). I love the sound of an X. It is there with a turbo aswell. You just get alot of go and not attract the fuse doing it. The X does enough of that just being what it is, so why cause more. SO,
TURBO TURGO VERY WELL THANK YOU VERY MUCH. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I've got an '86, but will be acquiring a pristine '76 (with the 61HP 1300) over the weekend as well. It's been awhile, but I can remember what it felt like driving my new '74 X after driving my '68 327 Chevy Nova. After building an appreciation for the outstanding characteristics of the X: looks, handling, targa top, gas mileage, exclusivity (for a while, anyway), I realized that the trade-off for less power was well worth it. Why not keep it Italian, make some power mods and invest in some earplugs, if you find it too loud. I think most people (exception, some old broke-d**ks) won't find it too terribly offensive. Putting a Chrysler drivetrain in seems almost sacriligious, I think anyway! <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->First of all (and in total opposition to my second point) the BIG advantage to a turbo is the lack of noise. The turbine does a very good job of disrupting the sounds pulses from the exhaust valves. Just make sure you use a recirculating dump valve and not an ordinary direct to atmosphere dump valve - otherwise with your wonderful QUIET new engine people will think you have a demented canary equiped with a megaphone hidden away under the covers.

Second point - there is nothing that says a performance exhaust HAS to be loud. A road car produces about 90dB at 4000rpm (tried and tested) with a standard exhaust, it isn't difficult (not too diffcult anyway) to keep to this level but the cost is a slightly heavier system since most people opt for the "silencer, what silencer?" approach. With careful design you should be able to acheive a near zero loss in power in comparison with a straight-thru' system. To make things more interesting you can buy DOHC heads off the shelf for an X1/9, sure it has to come from italy but they are there all the same! These heads were designed to fit the old SOHC block by FIAT and are actual production units (fitted to later FIATS). OK some adaptation is needed but it sure beats ditching a perfectly good block that fits the engine bay perfectly (if you can call an X engine bay perfect....) Just think about it - a stroked block with a DOHC head, now that sounds remarkably similar to the Dallara engines and those babies are pulling 0-60 in under 4 seconds! I'm not saying that's what you'll acheive (especially since the Dallaras weigh next to nothing) but my Integra can only pull 6.5 seconds and that is of marginally higher weight (than an X) and has just short of 200bhp on tap......<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The only reason I know about this was actually as the result of some spam....

What I do know is that there is a "tuning" company out in Italy (or may have been Eastern Europe) that are taking modern 16V heads from a model (or two) and converting them to fit the old SOHC blocks. What this envolves I don't know - I assume it is a matter of making sure that the studs and bolts all fit correctly.

The problem is that being spam I didn't save the original link and I have a funny feeling that it may have been my work account where I received it (hence I don't have it here right now)

As soon as I have more information I will let EVERYONE know about it!

BTW. The Honda is being traded in next weekend (at last - although I will miss 200 bhp on tap!) the replacement.....a brand new Fiat Marea of course (155bhp 20v engine) in a beautiful shade of silver!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->There are several reasons but here are the most important:

1) The car HAS to be cheaper to own and run than the Integra (not difficult)

2) The car must be capable of towing a trailer fully loaded up with my race car

3) The boot of the car had to be big enough to carry my tools and a full complement of spare wheels, when the rims are a pair of 10" wide and a pair of 8" wide units, you need a fair amount of space to squeeze them in! I also intend to have one of those portable pagoda style shelters while will have to aqueeze in with everything else. I can't sacrifice the rear seat for this as the odds are that I will have at least one person occupying them when the car is fully loaded.

4) I wouldn't be seen dead driving something with a blue oval or a griffin on it (Ford & Vauxhall)! This also extends to French cars (Citroen and Renault) and I have a dislike for German cars (although having driven a new Golf TDi estate across Austria I may have to change my opinion)

There is another rather practical reason for getting a Fiat, and that is simply spares - in an emergency (on track) I am more likely to be able to borrow bits from a Fiat (or Lancia) than I am from anything else.

I did have the option of buying a Lancia Thema Turbo Estate (bit of a mouthful) but having experienced its feeble attempts to climb a damp road up a hill I think I will stick with a normally aspirated vehicle.

There is also the matter of one of the sweetest 2.0L engines made outside of Japan. As always when you buy a fiat you buy a quality piece of engineering, it's just a shame about the quality of the rest of the car.....

Finally I got a good deal (and no-one else would take the Honda - I've been trying to sell it for just under a year so this counted substantially in my decision). That and I know the chief-mechanic at the dealership so I can give him an earful and STILL get the car fixed when it all goes horribly pear-shaped.
