oil pump question

hello I'm replacing my oil pump spring on my x1/9 and there is a rod in the center of it one end is plain the other end has a type of piece on the end when i took it off the rod came out and i need to know witch way does the piece on the end of it go does the piece go on facing the top of the engine or down facing the ground?
