I need help!!

I sepent the last three days replacing the head gasket on my X1/9, because it was overheating and also it was "bubling" on the water reservoir.

I also installed a new water pump, a new thermostat and I previously had sent the radiator to the shop to get it rodded (they had told me that they didn't disassembled to get it rodded, but that they put it in the hot tank and that they also checked the flow and it was ok)

I am running out of ideas, do you think that the engine's mixture could be lean (would this be that critical?)

Today everything seemed to be fine on my way to work (the first run after the repair)until I got stuck in traffic then the needle went close to 200 deg. and as soon as I started moving again the temp dropped back to 190 deg.

Any suggestions?... Please?

Hi Gilles!

Your story about the needle hitting 200+ while stuck in traffic is not that uncommon. Heck, my X does that and I know it is working properly. The key item that makes me believe this is not as big a problem as you might think is that when you started moving, the temp dropped back to normal. These cars have never been fond of idling for long periods in traffic.

My guess is that, if anything, perhaps your cooling system is just not bled completely - meaning there may be some air bubbles in the system, particularly in the heater core perhaps?

At any rate, if you have not seen it before I highly recommend to check out the Cooling System Bleeding page at the C. Obert & Co. website. They have some good advice there on getting all the air out of the system.

Considering all else you have done, it leads me to believe this may be the only problem. Like I said, it is really not unbelievable that your X would get hot in traffic even if everything is working as it should. It happens sometimes, although I do know that having the system fully bled does reduce the severity of it. -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I forgot to mention that installing a "flushing tee" (the plastic tee-shaped connector many shops use for a cooling system flush) at some high point in your cooling system (like near the head in the engine bay) provides another way - also an easier one - to "burp" the air out of the system. Run the car at a fast idle with the heater valve open. Uncap the flushing tee and see if there is no water flowing there. Add coolant directly into the tee until it is full. Cap it off, and run the engine up a few times (maybe even go for a short drive) and repeat the process. This will eventually bleed most all of the air from the system. -Mac.

Specifically, mine is on the hose which exits the block on a 90 degree bent metal tube just to the right (when looking from rear of car) of the manifolds, just below the timing belt... but I think either hose would do, since all you are doing with the tee is creating an additional way to add coolant to (and release air from) the system. I installed the tee at the highest point on the hose, just at the corner of the engine bay before it heads downward through the forward firewall and into the passenger compartment. Naturally you want to install it at the highest point possible so air will be most inclined to trap itself at the tee, where you can burp it out by opening the tee and adding coolant there. -Mac.

190 is a good operating temp.
200 is ok when stuck in traffic.
Around that point, your radiator fan should come on and keep the temp from climbing too much more. Does you fan work?

You could try it by letting the engine idle and see if it ever comes on. If it doesn't come on by about 220 or so, look for problems.

(car's not with me... what is that around 140 or so?). When I got the car, I though that had to be incorrect, so I replaced the thermostat and the temp sensor, and it is indeed accurate (so is the gauge... I did the hot water test with a thermometer, and it was +/- 5 degrees from the gauge.)

Seriously, your car is running cool. "Normal" temperature for an X is a relative thing anyway, I've never really seen two that were *exactly* alike, but the "average" one runs around 190-200 in normal driving situations. In traffic it may creep higher, but like Ulix says, the cooling fan should kick in if the temp gauge approaches 2/3rds the scale to the top.

That's "normal" behavior by my personal experience. Hotter than that would signal something may be wrong. Cooler (like yours) I don't believe to be a problem UNLESS the car never warms up completely. That could pose problems, but if the car is running up to the point that the heater is putting out hot air and all seems well, then my guess is that you simply have a very 'cool' X! :)

Just out of curiosity, what is the temperature rating on the thermostat you are using, Doc? -Mac.

No idea... whatever Vick Autosports sent me! :) Seriously, I have no idea how to tell.

By the way, I took the car out for a spin tonight, and made a point of checking the gauge as I drove... around 160 running, got up close to 180 at the long (3 minutes or so... or at least it seems that long) stop light near my house... and comes right back down as soon as I get moving again.

When I had the car in a few weeks back (ugh, what a nightmare) My mechanic backflushed the radiator and replaced all of the hoses... that may be part of the reason it is running so cool.

So, back atcha, how do you tell the temp rating?

I live in México City, very crowded and big big problems in traffic, I use my 79-X every day and some times at noon the temp raises 90 to 100 degrees.In ligths with hot asphalt the fans go on-off-on very often and I don't like the sound. Solution I put a switch to put on in direct, but... with one coil resistence behind the fans, this way the fans turns slowly with no sound and keep the temp at normal. If for some reason the temp raises the fans work normaly at nominal speed.
