My '86 has few buttons that operate the AC, Heater, Defrost, etc.
I know that if the OFF buttom is pressed, you are not supposed to have any outside air comming into the cabin. The air is supposed to get in after you select Heat or tha AC buttons.
But in my case does not matter what button is selected, you still have fresh air comming (and at 6AM is very cold indeed! (to make things worse my heater is disconected)
I believe that they are pneumatically assisted, but in this case you don't hear anything moving when you push the buttons.
Does somebody knows where is the vacuum gizmo that is supposed to open and close the heater and vent systems? I don't recall the vacuum hose from the engine compartment either (maybe electric?)

... BUT, I would check the air door to see if it is physically stuck open. This can often happen on any X1/9 and will cause the symptom you describe.
The air door is located at the base of the windshield, in the center of the wiper-motor & brake/clutch fluid res. compartment. It is basically directly below where the windshield washer nozzle is.
If the door gets jammed or the hinge binds up, then outside air will come in constantly.
It might also be that the cable which moves this door has come loose, either at the door end or inside your center console at the control end.
Maybe someone with a later A/C car could offer more likely suspects? -Mac.

I plan to take the thing apart and ahve a look the week after Christmas and will let you know. BTW...Fiat repair manual 501.03 has an exploded view of the whole assembly. Looks like there is a vaccuum motor (no. 35) that controls these panels...I'll let you know what I find out!

The vacuum is taken from the passenger side of the plenum. If you look at the end of the plenum closest to the passenger side shock tower, you'll see two vacuumm lines there, one goes to your heater box. The vacuum line goes into the spare tire compartment and supplies a reservior with vacuum.
From the reservoir a green vacuum line runs under the carpet alongside the center tunnel on the passenger side and up behind the center console, behind the dash and then to the push-button assembly.
The common cause of non-functioning flaps is that green vacuum line being pinched. It is most commonly pinched where it goes up behind the center console or behind the radio. This happens when the radio is installed or when the center console was out for whatever reason. I bet you'll find the hose pinched between the center console and the structure.

The vacuum is taken from the passenger side of the plenum. If you look at the end of the plenum closest to the passenger side shock tower, you'll see two vacuumm lines there, one goes to your heater box. The vacuum line goes into the spare tire compartment and supplies a reservior with vacuum.
From the reservoir a green vacuum line runs under the carpet alongside the center tunnel on the passenger side and up behind the center console, behind the dash and then to the push-button assembly.
The common cause of non-functioning flaps is that green vacuum line being pinched. It is most commonly pinched where it goes up behind the center console or behind the radio. This happens when the radio is installed or when the center console was out for whatever reason. I bet you'll find the hose pinched between the center console and the structure.

Last weekend I connected my heater hoses, now at least I have WARM AIR comming into the cabin.
However; I want it to be working properly and it looks like I'll be on my knees next to the passenger side console this holidays.
