I have a 79 carburetted X1/9 1500cc 5 spd. My problem is to start, electrical. My signals work all the time during the day (sometimes cut out when I am braking), but work very intermittently when I have the headlights on. My radio (aftermarket) also cuts out when I hit the brakes more often than not.

Now for the carburettor - I had it into my fiat guy here in town after working/fiddling with it for weeks myself. The cold idle does not work well - the engine will stall unless I crank up the idle to 2000-2300 RPM, then when it is hot and I shut it off and leave it for 10 minutes or more, I can crank the idle back down to 1000 and it runs perfectly. My mechanic told me the choke assembly was loose, he tightened it and it ran fine all day. Now tonite it is crapping out on me again, same thing. Any ideas? Would it be worth it to switch to FI - I can get a used system for about $150 US (I live in Canada, by the way). Please folks, any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at my address of ljklassen@mb.sympatico.ca as I don't know how often I can get back to this site over the next few days. Thanks alot, great to see a site for X1/9 owners!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->For the electrical, get your self some fine grain sandpaper, pop the fuses out of the fuse box, and clean the "prongs" that hold the fuses, and then slightly bend them in to give you a tighter fit on the fuses.

For the carb, you might have a bad idle solenoid. Try that, and pull the top off the carb and clean it out good, remove the jets (one at a time so you don't forget where they go), and clean them good. Other than that, I don't know.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Further to the Electrical, the turn signals not working too well when the headlamps are on, suggests a bad earth on the headlamps. They are sucking all the current through the turn signals, so these don't work when the headlamps are on. Open the front luggage compartment, and remove the headlamp covers on both sides,-just a half turn of the thumb screws will do. Somewhere in the deep cavern revealed will be an earth strip or spider with masses of black cables joined to it. Take each 0.25" crimp off and inspect for corrosion, and replace and re-crimp those that are not shiny anymore (probably all of them!). I did this on my car a few days ago (to fix a different problem) and the headlamps have brightened considerably.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

As for the 'lectrical... Carl's suggestion is a grand start.

I would start there, if that doesn't do it, then pull all the light connections and bulbs... do it ALL at once.

Test bulbs with a VOM or with a battery and test leads... replace as necessary. Then inspect wiring and connectors and re-install them... until you find trouble... or the trouble goes away.

I have found that if I "wholesale" it as described... I don't end up chasing my tail with one light working and then another one failing!

As for the carb... Sounds like intermittencies with dirt and NOT fully completing what needs to be done. Change out your fuel filter, buy two! Remove the carb and disassemble, clean with gasoline, blow out all passages with high pressure air.

DON'T use CARB acid... I ruined one of mine letting it soak too long...

Slowly disassemble and reassemble and disassemble again in STAGES. That way yur brain gets used to putting it back together! Don't mix up the metering rods, diassemble all four (three pieces each) clean and blow out.

I chased down intermittent operation for months with dirt in theses things.

If this does it... set choke appropriately and after a month, install the other fuel filter.

If this doesn't work... than the FI is a great deal, a 3 mpg fuel improvement... but ya better have ALL the parts! You may have to modify the exhaust or replace the manifold for the O2 bung... and I for one, don't think it'll work right without it... some feel it does.

A new carb is about 300 - 400 bucks... used ones... well, I bought two from Giant Auto for 50 bucks to make one good one... Derrick can be reached at 800-424-4677 and tell him I sent ya. Also tell him the EXACT carb type ya want. (32DHTA or whatever?) He ships UPS.

Good luck, welcome aboard, post your name on the Americas Map... write James Krass, and keep us posted.

(I know of one CRAZY CANUCK on the right coast named Perry... but stay away from him unless ya wanna TURBO CHARGE your engine...)

Best Regards,

Tony Natoli
