I´m going to do an overhaul of the transmission, but I am alsolooking for some more power.

It might be putting a Fiat Uno Turbo in or it might be something else.

What are the options with the original engine? What will give a good rise of the power, how much hp can one expect and what will give most value for the money?

Will you share your knowledge with me?

My vote (despite my dislike for forced induction) goes on the Uno turbo engine. In terms of bang-for-buck it offers the most, not to mention the easiest to transplant. My apologies to all those in the USA who've never seen an Uno Turbo! The best bit is that the Uno gearbox internals can also be transplanted to improve the reliability of the drivetrain too!

For about £3500 (not including obtaining the engine, but they cost about £400 s/h) you can get the power up to about the 220bhp, a good reliable 220bhp too. The 1500 stock engine can get to about 170bhp reliably, but you are talking about a good £7000 to acheive it, I can't say for the 1300 but I think you'll find it a fiarly close match for the 1500 thanks to the higher peak revs.

You could of course go for a 2.0l twin-cam, but don't forget that they are a pain to fit and they weigh more too.....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I'm told that some run FI cars with cams and are quite successful, other sources say no cam with injection. But if it works, let 'er rip! The 1300 head just bumps the compression up. I'm sure there is a good FI-hop-up expert on the forum. I'd love to hear what they have to say!

Yeah, I am still around. Mostly lurking over on X1/9 Racers Forum on Mirafiori, when I have time.

I have successfully run a PBS SX-1 cam in my fuel injection X for many years. The fuel injection system supposedly will not stand having too much of a camshaft. If you get into longer durations, the overlap increases as well. That is the part of the cycle when both the intake and exhaust valves are open. From what I understand, when the overlap gets too long, it fools the fuel injection system and the car will not idle. The cam in my car actually has a shorter duration than the stock cam, but higher lift. Now, I have read about guys that have put 40/80 cams in fuel injection motors successfully. This is not supposed to work. I have not personally seen one of these setups. My car does not idle down as well as it should, but will run at 800 RPM for smog day.

The cam in my car gives me both better torque and better top end horsepower. I have switched the transaxle final drive gears to the Strada 3.59:1 to take advantage of the increases. So, at the expense of some acceleration, I have a long legged good running X1/9 that can run with pretty much anybody (in a Fiat, of course)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I installed a FAZA 40/80 on my '86, and had also a FAZA header along with it, I ran this combination for several years with no real problems, the FI hold on there just fine.

However I never had to smogged the car so I really don't know if will pass (I seriously doubt it, because when it idles you can smell a bit of raw fuel on the exhaust)

The main problem here is the bottom end torque (none), the good thing is that with the needle pegged at 8000 RPM's the engine still pulls very strong, and the NOISE, oh that is the best part!!

(Until the next stop light and you have to race trough the gears just to keep up with the traffic) At least untill you reach 3000-3500 RPM's

So if you don't mind loosing your bottom end torque, then go for it!.

I am personally going to try PBX S-1 myself

Note that since there are no more cam blanks available, PBS can only supply regrinds. When they do a complete head, they usually lengthen the valves slightly to make up for this.
Also, the SX-1 cam has very steep ramps which makes it very versatile, but it also creates a little valve clatter.

I have a SX-1 regrind in my PBS big valve head. I also have an S-2 that I will try out soon.

Is this a similar story to why more Konis can't be made? Is there just too much cost involved for it to remain profitable? With such an interest from so many of us in items like cam blanks, why can't someone just get some blanks made? -Mac.

yes I think money is the problem.
There jsut isn't enough demand for cam blanks to make it feasible.

I believe new cam blanks have been manufactured foir the BMC A-series engine (such as in my Sprite, the Mini, etc) and even though there is a much much bigger market for these, they are still expensive.
