I saw something about it a while back, and was curious.

I have undertaken a project to build a softtop for my X... I am sick of having to deal with that bulky top if I only want to take a short ride on a nice day. Lemme bounce my idea off of you. I'd like to find a used top, and simply cut the front and back off of them, and recycle them by adding a piece of tonneau cover material in the middle. I bet it would baloon up in the middle when driving like a bananna cover on a jeep, but would be much easier to take on and off.

thoughts?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I would love to get ahold of a Saratoga top for my '80 X. They are indeed hard to locate anymore! If I cannot locate one, I might consider the next best thing: taking a spare top and cutting out all the top fiberglass, leaving only as thin a frame of the original as possible, then getting a custom piece of lexan or perspex type plexiglass to fit into the open portion. Same idea as a Saratoga, except this would employ the original fiberglass 'skeleton' of the top.

I have seen some folks put sunroofs in their targa tops, and while it does allow light in without having the top off, I don't think it compliments the appearance of the car very much, whereas the Saratoga or similar would look nice IMO.

Also of interest to the recent Dardo talks: the Dardo Montserrat came with a Saratoga-style top as an option! I wonder if DiNizo was using actual Saratogas or if he was getting these made himself in Brazil? -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have ridden in a Corvette ZR-1 with a glass top and I have driven cars with large sliding glass sunroofs (Peugeot 205 GTI).

In both cases, I was diappointed.
As soon as the sun comes out, you get hot and annoyed quickly by the sun shining on your head.
In the 205, you can pull a cover forward beneath the glass top. I found that I had this closed most of the time.

The first time it rains, it is a neat experience to have the rain fall on you w/o getting wet :)
But this gets old too.

Just my experiences.

For those who haven't seen it, it is a later style Bertone top which was smoothed over and painted gloss black as the car body was.

It was on there when I bought the '80 X, so I guess that one of the PO's had gotten the top from one of the mid '80s Bertones and put it on his car... whoever that PO was, I am grateful for the nice top :)

And thanx for the compliment Ulix. I would never screw with that top! But I would like to try the plexi-top idea if the perspex were tinted darkly enough. -Mac.

You're not the first to thinkg about putting a soft top on the X1/9. 20 years ago, some were sold with snaps that had to be screwed on the top windshield post.

I heard various idea about other designs. Weathertight and theft resistant are things to consider. If just by pushing on the top, it will fall in the car, I don't think it is a really good idea. The best solutions I discussed with some fellow was to use the front and the rear of the stock top, fit a canvas top all over it (so the front and the rear would be rigid and the middle, soft) and have a rail on each side that could be folded to store the top, or locked to keep it in place. It may be possible to do it without the rails.

I have not heard about anybody who did that yet. It is on my list of long, long, long term project I hope to do one day.

Bye

Amco is the company who back in the late '70s and early '80s was making the soft tops for the X, among many other little add-ons. One of the Xs running around Seattle has the small snaps around the window frame & targa bar for the AMCO soft top. Last I heard, this car was recently sold by its PO, and the new owner has expressed interest in joining SeaX - so maybe we'll know more soon about that. Check the AMCO thread in our archives to see a full color ad about the accessories, and to hear more on this topic.

Also, there is a company in the UK who has a 3-piece folding top design for the X1/9 under development. Actually, one company was developing it, and folded (no pun). Another X partshouse acquired the stock of the first, which I think included the plans for this collapsible top panel. I will see what I can find out about the status of this project next time I speak with the gent. Peace, -Mac.

(This is my very personal opinion)

IMO the stock top is great, it makes the car fairly leakproof and quiet when the top is on.
Once you are used to it, it takes about 15 sec. to open or close the car from unlocking the trunk to closing the latches.

Where would you store the folding top in the car? It wouldn't fit in the front trunk sideways, I don't know if it would fit in the rear trunk.
On a road trip, it would probably take up more space in the trunk that the stock top, unless you store it lilke the stock top which kind of defeats the purpose.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Dear Ulix,
I figure the need for a soft option (ouch!) is more a need in rainy States and countries which ensures that just when you have loaded the targa into the boot, Big G's sprinkler starts up again! Add to the fact that stop-go traffic means precipitation falls on your head instead of being directed over the screen and I'm sure you get the picture! A return to the targa means, when the sun returns, you sweat or stop again .....not ideal.
Some owners on this side of the puddle choose to fit sunroofs in their targas. This is ok if they are slightly curved in side elevation. The fitment of a flat type looks strange.
My five year buddy, Steve Topham, owns the Aladdin's Grotto breakers and supply house. He bought the rights and stocks of Bits4Xs exxy parts and soft top designs. You might want to give him a gee-up! He always comes through but, just like molasses, he doesn't move too quickly unless he has heat applied to his base!
Steve is on Upworld@aol.com
As to storage, the top will fold back onto the roll bar behind the driver's head. The roll being secured by straps of Velcro (or similar). Removed and collapsed, the top will store easily behind the passenger seat.
