I'm working on my newest X. Heavy body
damage on the left rear quarterpanel.
The outside sheet metal is crunched hard but
no visible damage to the structural inner
layer.
There appears to be a whole lot of caster on
the rear left wheel. Like w-a-y more than
a typical X.
Is there a way to adjust this ? I'm not
looking for dead-on accuracy, I just want to
get close.
Possibly adjustable / eccentric bolts for
the bottom of the strut ? Or just open up
the top of the tower and slide the strut outboard?

the guardrail and pretty much cooked all the bodywork
beyond the wheel.
A whack that hard would likely have tweaked the strut.

I have two parts cars and if you want you can have one of them, cut the complete rear quarter panel and make a great X's out the two.
It's a lot of work but if you have the space, time and the will you may end with a great car.
The catch is that you have to come and pick it up with a trailer. (my wife will love you for that)

Us folks used to have a pretty good showing at the Brookine Transportation Museum show on Italian Car day, but I think that's really waned over the past few years.
Anyway - a bit about my toys :
I have an 86 X1/9, about 60,000 miles on it, needs some bodywork (rear trunk bottom corners gone), typical for a N.E. car. PBS flywheel, about 500 miles on it and a new clutch, jet-hot IAP header and intake runners. Previous owner started sanding it for a repaint. Ran great, haven't touched it in a year and a half.
The patient at the moment is an 87X, given as a "donation" from the original owner who didn't have the room nor time. He does have a good sense of humor, since when he dropped it off the transmission was completely disassembled and in a cardboard box ! It's
sat for 5 years so far.
Since I can never leave well enough alone... my daily driver is an 87 Jeep, swapped in 94 engine and tranny. T-case out of an 82, axles out of a 3/4 ton international. Engine driven air compressor and arcwelder just in case
Working on an 85 jeep using the same recipie...
And for when things just get too big to deal with a cute 1955 truck with only 10,000 miles. USGI, 5-ton, 483ci multifuel turbo engine! Thank you Uncle Sam. Not a $50 jeep in a crate but not far off !
See why I need to start getting rid of some of this stuff ?

Slotting the top strut mount is by far the best method of camber adjustment. This has been well proven in many different types of mcphearson strut cars, including the X, for many years. It is a method I have used with much success. However, slotting the lower strut mount has never been a good, reliable solution. It is difficult to keep the adjustment from moving and if it does it causes major toe changes, especially in the front. The reason it is so un-reliable is the point of adjustment takes all of the suspension loading directly on the adjustment. It is also quite difficult to get the adjustment accurate because small movements result in large changes of geometery.

There appears to be a whole lot of caster on

Is there a way to adjust this ? I'm not
looking for dead-on accuracy, I just want to
get close.
Possibly adjustable / eccentric bolts for
the bottom of the strut ? Or just open up
the top of the tower and slide the strut outboard?

the guardrail and pretty much cooked all the bodywork
beyond the wheel.
A whack that hard would likely have tweaked the strut.

I have two parts cars and if you want you can have one of them, cut the complete rear quarter panel and make a great X's out the two.
It's a lot of work but if you have the space, time and the will you may end with a great car.
The catch is that you have to come and pick it up with a trailer. (my wife will love you for that)

Us folks used to have a pretty good showing at the Brookine Transportation Museum show on Italian Car day, but I think that's really waned over the past few years.
Anyway - a bit about my toys :
I have an 86 X1/9, about 60,000 miles on it, needs some bodywork (rear trunk bottom corners gone), typical for a N.E. car. PBS flywheel, about 500 miles on it and a new clutch, jet-hot IAP header and intake runners. Previous owner started sanding it for a repaint. Ran great, haven't touched it in a year and a half.
The patient at the moment is an 87X, given as a "donation" from the original owner who didn't have the room nor time. He does have a good sense of humor, since when he dropped it off the transmission was completely disassembled and in a cardboard box ! It's
sat for 5 years so far.
Since I can never leave well enough alone... my daily driver is an 87 Jeep, swapped in 94 engine and tranny. T-case out of an 82, axles out of a 3/4 ton international. Engine driven air compressor and arcwelder just in case
Working on an 85 jeep using the same recipie...
And for when things just get too big to deal with a cute 1955 truck with only 10,000 miles. USGI, 5-ton, 483ci multifuel turbo engine! Thank you Uncle Sam. Not a $50 jeep in a crate but not far off !

(I think they were made for Honda's), and also welding washers to the side of the strut to hold the new settings. You are certainly right about the toe change!
