Has anybody done this? Can it be done and what do I have to do? I've got two good starters, both with bad solenoids. I'm too cheap to buy a new ones right now. What actually goes bad on a solenoid anyway?
Later : )

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->If you only mean the electrical component (which acts as a high voltage relay), then there's a simple solution. Go to Schucks and ask for an old Ford starter solenoid (they're totally seperate from starter, and only 8 bucks), then rewire your starter using the ford solenoid and some longer wires.
If you mean the kickup mechanism for the gear that turns the flywheel also, I do not know what to do.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The smartest thing you could do would be to just start asking around the forums for a used one! Try posting a want ad in the FS&W Forum right here on this site, also try posting a want ad on the forum at http://www.mirafiori.com . If that doesn't work, or if you would rather go new, time to hit the vendors. Just pleeEEEaze don't buy Fiat parts from these chain stores. Their parts are cheep - cheap to buy because they are cheaply made - and it is making it a lot harder for the independent Fiat parts vendors (who we all NEED) to stay in business. Just my opinions.

I'm not trying to criticize though, I have bought parts from the local auto parts chain stores before, but only certain things. If you need spark plugs, filters, regular maintenance items, go for it! BUT if you need a real part please buy from a real Fiat parts vendor

If you cannot afford a new one right now, try to find one at the junk yard, you should be expecting to pay about $10 or $20 for a complete starter!

Good luck,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I haven't done my Fiat yet... but just noticed a click-click the other day...

I learned this old trick from a 63 year old mechanic back in 1967... and have been successful in every attempt... I have NOT tried a Ford's remote... as they are usually so easy to get to and replace.

Hopefully the "philosophy" will work on the Fiats.

1. Pull starter, dissaemble, clean, lube bearings, replace brushes. (Most REAL hardware stores carry "universal" brushes and if they don't have your exact size, buy a bigger set, file or grind to fit.)

2. Disassemble Solenoid, plunger and piston and note copper contact "washer" that engage the internal "contacts", which are the heads of the copper bolts that the hot lead is tied to, connecting power to the starter's input lead.

You'll probably see the heads of the copper bolts are worn in a half moon shape. Loosening the retaining nuts and rotating the bolts 180 degrees gives you a whole new surface to play with.

As for the copper contact washer on the plunger... if it can be easily removed and re-installed after flipping it over... you now have another new surface. If it looks like you can only break it apart... then just clean it up with a file or sandpaper as the bolts themselves will give you another ten years of solenoid life.

I have also been known to replace the bolts entirely and solder fill contact washers...

Good Luck

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Just overhauled my starter and solenoid today... with good results.

Had to un-solder two leads after removing two phillips head screws from the solenoids's end cap.

After heating and tapping solder off, I finally "pried up" the end cap as I heated each lead. Then cleaned up the lead and hole for re-assembly. Mark all casings so they go back together correctly... see below!

Otherwise, all went as planned and I was able to resurface the contacts with a file and sand paper. Found main contacts [boltheads] were "concave" from their manufacture and now I've given them at least 100% more contact area.

Also found the brushes to be in excellent condition and just cleaned and lubed the rest.

BE SURE to BENCH TEST... so ya don't have to reinstall it twice... like I did! I think I installed the solenoid 180 degrees out and that sends 12 volts to ground. (One solenoid lead reads ground [case] potential) I'm not sure how this works [from and electrical standpoint] anymore... but it does!

Good Luck...
