rubber strip below door

which is held on by a plastic black strip that it slots into.

Whats it for and do I need it?

The reason I ask is that the plastic rubs aginst the paintwork of the sill -I've just painted it as well, and there are now marks where the plastic securing bungs stand proud of the plastic strip and have rubbed on my paintwork.

Hey Duncan

I also took mine off ... no problems with draughts etc. The holes left help the water drain out of the door cavity. Discard and be rid!

I took mine off long ago.

I felt they were a moisture trap. I cleaned the holes up a bit and put a dab of rust converter and paint to protect it. I didn't notice any negative results of doing this.
