Following up on my questions about shifter shortening - I wanted to let you know how I solved it, in case anyone else has similar wants/needs. I was in my local pep boys last night, and came across a new item they are stocking... shift knobs by a company called "Racing speed shop". In short, a dino style shift knob in black leather for $20. I installed it without using the spacers and adapters supplied, which dropped it by about 2 inches... on top of the fact that the Bertone know stuck up about 2 inches above the end of the bar... so I got two inches lopped off instead of the three I wanted, but no cutting, no getting the bar threaded, etc. It feels great in my hand and is much more comfortable to shift now.

Try the old style shifter. The black ball ones from the 70's X1/9s. I don't know why they ever changed it. All my Xs have them equipped and usually run about fifty cents to a dollar to buy from a scrapyard. It is lower and gives you a good grip. The best part is you feel where all the are gears when shifting. Oh yeah...ever see what Ferraris use? The same exact thing. Even on the current models. Give it a try. It's cheap and I'm sure you'll stay with it.
