Should I lubricate new speedo cable?

Replacing speedo cable for the 3rd or 4 time. This time installing with new holes in front trunk, as shown in Best of Xweb pix.

I have seen some forums (for other cars, not X) that recommend lubricating cables except for last 3 inches at each end.

Should I coat core of cable with lubricant? If so, is white lithium grease suitable?

I used white lithium grease

And so far, so good, after three years. This isn't exactly a high-stress application, so I'd expect that anything that is reasonably stable and protects against corrosion would be fine.
