So my kid broke his wrist...

True Classic
Captain Skinny, my 13year old, got trounced at Football practice yesterday... last play of the day of course. Fractured and displaced his left radius up at the wrist. Emergency room doped him up BIGTIME and set the bones. (that was tough to watch as a parent) They splinted us up and sent us home with some vicodin... he's still crashed out.

Today we have an appointment with an orthopaedics doc I saw when I broke my elbow skateboarding 2 years ago... really liked the place, and even though they are specialist, the bills weren't outrageous. My son is a new patient...

So I'm filling out 'new patient' information on the website for the orthopaedists office... and it ask his 'ethnicity'...

My choices are... (in this order)

-Hispanic or Latino/Spanish
-Spaniard
-Mexican
-Central American
-South American
-Latin American/Latin, Latino
-Puerto Rican
-Cuban
-Dominican

-Not Hispanic or Latino

:shock2:Wow.

Does that seem a little bit over the top with the whole 'Latino' thing, or is it just me?:hmm: I mean I know I'm living in Texas, but wow...

Are these even...

'ethnicity' categories? Weird! Do bones break differently for each of these groups?

Hope Captain Skinny is OK:( He may get to like that Vicodin, pretty good s**t.
My wife had the same break from a biking fall back several years. It healed up really well-except when she doesn't want to lift something and then the symptoms come back mysteriously:wink2::laugh::laugh:

It might seem odd...

Especially if you consider yourself "white", but keep in mind to someone who identifies as one of those choices, the differences can be great.

Also, it's important for medical practitioners to know as much of this as is possible. There are numerous typical and chronic conditions that some ethnicities suffer from, and it's also useful for statistics (think CDC).

Yeah, but "Not hispanic or latino" for all others? I guess they're only interested in statistics for hispanics/latinos.....

Maybe, but some of these..

distinctions would be the equivalent of breaking down the European-American population by nations. Are you a white person of:
English
Irish
French
Dutch
etc, etc.

I mean South American vs. Central American?

Probably more a profile of who will pay their bills:shock:

No break down for any other races or anything though... no Asian breakdown, nothing... To me it seemed more like a 'questionaire' designed for someone doing a census style survey.

Ortho likes the way the ER set it, and splinted it... and doesn't seem worried about healing prospects even though it was up at the growth plate... he doesn't want to cast till Tuesday after swelling is down. So I guess that's cool.

Good news

About the wrist.

The questions may be related to illegal immigration, maybe you should ask them about it next time. :hmm:

Greg, you're absolutely correct ....

During my time as a salesman for a French manufacturer, I was required to sell capillary electrophoresis equipment for the early diagnosis of various ethnicity specific diseases.
As a matter of protocol in the UK, lots of hospitals, that lie within the borders of high density immigrant communities, are routinely screened for ethnicity specific diseases.
As races intermarry and become more of an amalgam of differing ethnic blends, so then the origins of their ethnic roots become harder to categorize.
Myself, I am dutch south african and english, mixed with european jewish.
:2c:

Aha, interesting family backgound, mate......!

.....Myself, I am dutch south african and english, mixed with european jewish.......

Pottsy, is that why you love eating cheese, worship Eugene Terre'Blanche, speak with a 'posh' accent, and have lotsa money (but well hidden away)!!

cheers, Ian - NZ

I don't want to argue with....

anyone with such an eclectic bloodline, but is 'South American' really an ethnicity that might have genetic disease issues. I understand that that North Americans do have them-Canadians for instance.

I thought electrophoresis was a rustproofing system for old cars under restoration:hmm::hmm::wink2:

I hope you simply skipped the question and went on to the next one...like how many guns are in your household and have you stopped beating your wife yet.

Lawso ........

Love cheese (but not Edam), despise nazis by whatever stripe. I speak in an amalgam of predominantly Mancunian, Lancastrian, Scouse and Wearside (pron: we're side), which accounts for my sometimes unintelligible speech! I am advised that, when I speak German my accent is definitely dutch - go figure ....:hmm:
Unfortunately, my birth mother had me adopted at 3 weeks so I didn't get the unkindest cut of all, get to eat gefiltre fish or matsos. Missed out on my barmitzva and didn't sign up for the Iraeli forces in '69. I do like salt beef sandwiches and have a yen to try latkes with sour cream.
Banking, my pound of flesh, running pickpockets in London, jewelry as well as usuary and all the other sterotypical negative jewish associations have been notable by their absence.
My adoptive mother did want me to become a doctor - does that count?

Shalom (Where's my mate Herzel when I need him?):wink2:

Potts....

Do you know the old joke:

A Jewish lady is running down the beach frantically screaming "Help, help, my son the doctor is drowning!!!.."

Hmmmm, yes it does..........!!

......My adoptive mother did want me to become a doctor - does that count?.......

.....Dr. Davide Pottzinski!! Yes, it DOES have a nice ring (a la cash register) to it!! :geek:

cheers, Ian - NZ
