Starter keeps running

This has happened twice in about a week. I go to start the car and the starter keeps running after the engine fires. I turn the ignition switch off and it keeps running. I'm thinking that it must be the ignition switch and not the starter. I know a sticky solenoid can keep the starter running after the engine has started, but I turn the car off and it keeps on cranking. What do you think?

My first check...

If this happened to me would be to unplug the ignition switch to see if it stopped the starter turning, and if so test it for power at the key on wire when turned off.

Then I'd check elsewhere...

As Greg says...

Pull the lower panel under the column and locate the 4 wire plug and connector for the ignition switch.

Make sure wiring and connector is not fried. (This is why we have a BWM!)

Loosen and reconnect.

Then (when) the problem occurs or if you can get it to occur... unplug the connector.

If the starter stops, its in the ignition switch.

If it keeps running, its forward in the solenoid or starter or wiring to them.

Let us know what ya find...
