I have been told that the pinion can be moved closer to the rack to tighten things up a bit.

I have never seen significant wear in an X1/9 rack. (I have seen plenty of problems with the 124 Spider tractor steering though

I would jack up the front, get under there and have a helper turn the steering back and forth to see if you can make out what the problem is. Pay attention to the tie-rod ends etc.

Inspect the steering rack boots. If they are all shredded and grit has gotten into the rack, I suppose you could have some steering rack wear.

What exactly are the symptoms?
Clunking when you hit a bump? (I'd suspect balljoints)
When the car is stationary and you turn the wheel lightly back and forth, how much play to you see?
How many miles are on the car?

Steve, what is it that makes you suspect the rack? I'm not saying it isn't that, just that it is more likely something else (unless you are already certain - did it explode?) Comments anyone? -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->While it is rare to wear the actual rack and pinion enough to have any play (I had one with almost 200K miles on it that got a little sloppy) it is common to wear out the rack bushing.

The rack bushing is a little plastic/nylon insert that goes in the driver's side end. You must remove the rack and the boot to get to it. You should be able to buy the bushing and new boots from a good supplier. If the boot is torn, I can almost garantee the bushing is bad.

I will take your advice and jack her up and have a feel of the ball joints.

Any looseness and the rack bushing is worn out. You may have to turn the steering wheel all the way each way to have access.

Tie rods and lower ball joints are also suspect of course.

However, loose joints do not cause vibration. They can compound vibration from an out of round or unbalanced wheel, or road irregularities.

Yesterday I was going through my repair manual and according to it, you can adjust the rack with shims of different thickness.
It can be done for the early and the latter models as well.

If you want, I can make a photocopy of the tests and procedures from the manual and fax them to you (it's only a couple of pages).

One thing for sure, the rack must be removed from the car.
