I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who made suggestions about my fuel problem.
I took Gregory Smiths advice and changed my fuel filter several times (and carry spares). The X has successfully made two trips to Olympia and back with NO trouble!! (probably the farthest it has ever traveled in one day).
Don't worry Ulix, as soon as I have the time I am still going to yank the gas tank and use the cool chemicals you gave me. Thank you again for those by the way.

So far the filter job has been working very well. The X made it back and forth from school and interviews all week (a grand total of 300 trouble free miles). I believe that is the longest I have ever seen it go without having problems.
I may not have the chance to pull the tank very soon to try the chemicals as I have just waged war on a discriminating teacher at my school, so most of my "free time" is being sucked up by talking to the powers that be at South Puget Sound Community College.
However as soon as I have the chance, I'll let everyone know how the tank chemicals do and if you still have that tank laying around wayne, I'll be glad to make you and offer if I need it.

If you have access to a good spare tank, you can raise your car (literally) and swap tanks in about 1 1/2 hours (complete job).
Don't ask me how many times I had to remove my tank last summer (several times in one week!)
It's actually an easy job, the most important thing is having to raise your car as high as possible (at least three feet) because the tank slides almost entirely down from it's position.

I decided to use the POR-15 system which consists of three steps, cleaner/rust remover, etching and sealing.
According with the instructions you should allow the tank to dry at least 24 hours between each step, this procedures took most of one week by themselves.
It came out great, in fact too good because after letting the sealer dry for the required 24 hours (last step), I installed the tank add the fuel to the tank but the engine failed to run (?), after inspection I found out that I wasn't getting any fuel into the fuel pump (FI), after draining the tank and removing it from the car again, then I found out that the screen at the bottom of the tank was perfectly sealed with POR-15.
It was a bear to remove the small screen from the pick up tube inside the tank, I removed most of it reinstalled the tank and the car ran great (for two days), during rush hour my engine quitted on the middle of the freeway (right when I was thinking "wow it runs great...")
Needles to say the tank was removed again after an expensive towing) but this time I got rid of every little piece of screen that was attached to the pick up tube. Afterwards the car really ran great!
What really hurt my ego, was the fact of accepting that the tank didn't really needed a tank coating, because it really had very marginal rust.
Also another bad thing is that my wife was in front of me while I was reading the "Chiltons?" repair manual and it says "for fuel tank repair" it's recommended to seek professional help...
So my wife was making fun of me all this time chanting "you should have got professional help..."
The good part of it? I can warrantee you that this tank will NEVER RUST no matter what! Also I became an expert for 'X tanks fast removing procedures!
That is why I am telling Holly if she has access to an extra tank, to use it then she will have all the time in the world to repair hers, however I don't think the early type tanks has the screen at the bottom, instead they are at the fuel sender assy.

That explains it then ! And here I thought it was going to be something with the float/sender.
I too did the very same thing with a tank once. Had two carbs fed from the tank and couldn't figure why one had a full bowl and the other was leaning out.
Took the petcock off from the tankstub and found what I thought was a teflon tape 'worm' inside the passage. Turns out the tank sealer seeped into the passage I thought was clear when I visually inspected it. I should have rodded it at that point then before reassembly.
One point....Professional some times does not equal proficient (help). There is a difference, right ?

I took Gregory Smiths advice and changed my fuel filter several times (and carry spares). The X has successfully made two trips to Olympia and back with NO trouble!! (probably the farthest it has ever traveled in one day).
Don't worry Ulix, as soon as I have the time I am still going to yank the gas tank and use the cool chemicals you gave me. Thank you again for those by the way.

So far the filter job has been working very well. The X made it back and forth from school and interviews all week (a grand total of 300 trouble free miles). I believe that is the longest I have ever seen it go without having problems.
I may not have the chance to pull the tank very soon to try the chemicals as I have just waged war on a discriminating teacher at my school, so most of my "free time" is being sucked up by talking to the powers that be at South Puget Sound Community College.
However as soon as I have the chance, I'll let everyone know how the tank chemicals do and if you still have that tank laying around wayne, I'll be glad to make you and offer if I need it.

If you have access to a good spare tank, you can raise your car (literally) and swap tanks in about 1 1/2 hours (complete job).
Don't ask me how many times I had to remove my tank last summer (several times in one week!)
It's actually an easy job, the most important thing is having to raise your car as high as possible (at least three feet) because the tank slides almost entirely down from it's position.

I decided to use the POR-15 system which consists of three steps, cleaner/rust remover, etching and sealing.
According with the instructions you should allow the tank to dry at least 24 hours between each step, this procedures took most of one week by themselves.
It came out great, in fact too good because after letting the sealer dry for the required 24 hours (last step), I installed the tank add the fuel to the tank but the engine failed to run (?), after inspection I found out that I wasn't getting any fuel into the fuel pump (FI), after draining the tank and removing it from the car again, then I found out that the screen at the bottom of the tank was perfectly sealed with POR-15.
It was a bear to remove the small screen from the pick up tube inside the tank, I removed most of it reinstalled the tank and the car ran great (for two days), during rush hour my engine quitted on the middle of the freeway (right when I was thinking "wow it runs great...")
Needles to say the tank was removed again after an expensive towing) but this time I got rid of every little piece of screen that was attached to the pick up tube. Afterwards the car really ran great!
What really hurt my ego, was the fact of accepting that the tank didn't really needed a tank coating, because it really had very marginal rust.
Also another bad thing is that my wife was in front of me while I was reading the "Chiltons?" repair manual and it says "for fuel tank repair" it's recommended to seek professional help...
So my wife was making fun of me all this time chanting "you should have got professional help..."
The good part of it? I can warrantee you that this tank will NEVER RUST no matter what! Also I became an expert for 'X tanks fast removing procedures!
That is why I am telling Holly if she has access to an extra tank, to use it then she will have all the time in the world to repair hers, however I don't think the early type tanks has the screen at the bottom, instead they are at the fuel sender assy.

That explains it then ! And here I thought it was going to be something with the float/sender.
I too did the very same thing with a tank once. Had two carbs fed from the tank and couldn't figure why one had a full bowl and the other was leaning out.
Took the petcock off from the tankstub and found what I thought was a teflon tape 'worm' inside the passage. Turns out the tank sealer seeped into the passage I thought was clear when I visually inspected it. I should have rodded it at that point then before reassembly.
One point....Professional some times does not equal proficient (help). There is a difference, right ?
